Exhibit Policy for the Davis Library Display
Cases
The following policy has been developed to promote
equitable access to the display facilities in Davis
Library and to ensure that displays reflect the
Library's overall commitment to quality. This
policy applies to all exhibits in the Library.
- Library exhibits will be approved based
upon satisfactory completion of the attached
proposal form. Proposals will be evaluated based on
their intellectual content, originality, design
plan, and appropriateness of subject matter, as
described below.
- Displays must highlight library
collections and/or services, either directly or
indirectly, and thus promote scholarly and
educational use of the library. A display
highlighting a regional conference on jazz, for
example, would be approved if it contained album
jackets, copies of sheet music, books, journal
articles, or other library materials, as well as
posters announcing the event. An exhibit consisting
exclusively of local crafts would not meet display
criteria. Displays may highlight collections or
services in campus libraries other than Davis.
- Exhibits may not commercialize or
editorialize personal or partisan opinions or
viewpoints, but should inform and educate the
public.
- Displays must be of high-quality design
and execution.
- All library materials must be displayed in
a manner consistent with sound preservation
principles. The Library will be happy to provide
advice or guidance in this area. The Library may
request that materials displayed in a potentially
damaging manner be redisplayed or removed from the
exhibit. Display of materials from the Library's
Special Collections requires the advance written
approval of the Library's Conservator and the
Curator of the relevant collection for each item
(form available upon request).
- Priority will be given to exhibits curated
by the Library. In the case of two or more guest
exhibits proposed for the same time period,
priority will be given to the first submitted
proposal which meets all criteria outlined in this
policy.
- Exhibits will normally be approved for a
maximum display period of one month.
- Any exhibit costs will be assumed by the
sponsoring organization. Security and/or insurance
for displays is the responsibility of the
sponsoring body. No item in an exhibit may display
prices for sale.
- The Library cannot be responsible for
personally valuable items placed in the display
case. Inclusion of such items in displays is
strongly discouraged.
- Exhibits created by guests must include a
sign or other label indicating the name of the
individual or organization responsible for the
exhibit.
