Subject Searching and Browsing Areas

To search the online catalog for books on your subject, use the terms celtic antiquities or art celtic for the most (broad) results. Search also, for example, by calligraphy celtic or decoration and ornament celtic or civilization celtic for those subjects or by figure represented, e.g. gods celtic or object type as well, e.g. illumination of books and manuscripts celtic, crosses-Ireland, sheela-na-gigs, etc. For some specific works, sites or monuments you may search, for example, by book of kells or book of durrow or tara or skellig Michael or stylistic periods la tene. Another search is mythology celtic. Try keyword searches in addition to subject searches.

For browsing in the stacks, the general classification areas are: for Celtic art N5925; for ancient Irish art N6783; for costume NK4706.4; for decoration and ornament NK1264; enameling NK5003.2 and manuscript illumination ND2940. The following additional print, electronic and Internet resources will be important as well. Some of the most important are starred. If you find a particularly useful book be sure to look for other books or articles by that author, and always consult the bibliographies, especially those in the Grove. Much of the important literature will be in archaeological publications, particularly British and French. For additional information consult the following resources: locate call numbers by searching online catalog by title.
