The David K. Stone Picture File
David K. Stone, a nationally known
illustrator, was past president of the Society of
Illustrators and a member of the board of the
Graphic Artists
Guild. His paintings are in many permanent
collections in the U.S., including the Smithsonian,
and he has won numerous awards. Over the course of
his career, he assembled this file as a research
tool for his own artwork, which included
illustration, graphic art, murals and other genres
in the narrative tradition. The Sloane Art Library
is pleased to be the recipient of this resource,
which consists of 7 vertical file cabinets,
organized by subject.
About the ArtistDavid Karl Stone (1922-2001) was born in Reedsport, Oregon and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon. He pursued graduate study there and at the Art Center College in Los Angeles and the Universidad de Michoacan in Mexico. He illustrated more than 80 books, advertising, and magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Woman's Day, McCall's, Esquire, Newsweek, and Lithopinion. He also designed commemorative stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Princeton University, the Smithsonian Institution, Society of Illustrators, as well as in private collections.
