Dubos, Abbé (Jean-Baptiste) 1670-1742, Réflexions critiques sur la poésie et sur la peinture. 6th edition. Paris: Pissot, 1755. First published in 1719, with a 1748 edition
published in London, and in a German edition in
Copenhagen, the three volume treatise on all the arts,
including poetry, theater and music, was considered an
important work by no less a critic than Voltaire. The
title page vignette is by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas
(1707-83) after a drawing probably by Charles Eisen
(1720-78.) Le Bas, elected to the Academy in 1734,
engraved religious and historical subjects, genre,
portraits and landscape. Eisen, Mme. Pompadour's
drawing teacher, trained in Le Bas' workshop, and was
known for his drawings for the Fables of
Fontaine and Ovid's Metamorphoses. URL: http://www.lib.unc.edu/graduate/about.html |
