LATIN AMERICAN ART: a guide to selected resources



INTRODUCTION

This guide is intended to be a starting point for the very broad Latin American course which includes Pre-Columbian art to contemporary. Browsing Areas include:
N 6502.5 -- Latin American art, general
E51-73 -- Pre-Columbian America (before 1492)
F1219 -- Latin and Spanish America

All books are in the Art Library unless otherwise indicated. Many books on Pre-Columbian art will be in Davis, and a significant number of Spanish language works will also be in Davis. Starred titles are of major importance. See also Art Library "Latino Art" research guide.

A chronological index of exhibitions, including exhibit catalogs and descriptions, that have taken place at the Organization of American States in Washington D.C., between 1941 and 1985. Useful for verifying names and dates.

An early resource organized by period (Colonial, 19th century, and contemporary), then by geographical divisions, and finally by technique/medium. Includes all of Latin America, and provides concise, useful descriptions of each title.

A comprehensive biographical dictionary including more than 12,000 artists.

Latin American Women Artists, Kahlo and Look Who Else: A Selective Annotated Bibliography. REF N6502.5 .P84 1996
A valuable resource that considers both prominent and lesser-known Latina artists.

Leonard's Price Index of Latin American Art at Auction REF N 6502 .L46 1999
Includes an interesting introductory essay, "Art: The Twentieth Century", by Alejandro Anreus which examines the changes and leading movements in Latino Art over the course of the past century. Useful to verify names and dates.

Memoria: Cuban art of the 20th century REF N6603 .M46 2002
Massive biographical dictionary with illustrations.

Pintando el mundo: diccionario de artistas latinoamericanas y españolas REF N6558 .M37 2000
Organized by country, includes chronology, bibliography and illustrations.

Illustrated, comprehensive resource containing biographical and career information on 375 prominent Latino and Latin American artists of the past century.

Women Artists of Color: A Bio-critical Sourcebook. REF N8354 .W656 1999
Features section on "Latin American Women Artists" with biographical essays, publication listings, and exhibition histories for each artist. Includes contemporary artists not represented in other biographical dictionaries.

Mexic-Arte Museum
An Austin, TX museum dedicated to cultural enrichment and education through the presentation and promotion of traditional and contemporary Mexican, Latino, and Latin American art and culture.

El Museo Del Barrio, New York
The only museum in New York City that specializes in the art of all of Latin America and the Caribbean. Includes collections of Pre-Columbian art, traditional arts, and more.
