Encyclopedias:

The Grove Dictionary of Art Online is a major encyclopedic work for art with extensive texts, bibliographies, links to images on the web, cross-references to related topics, etc. Essential resource; print edition also in Art Library.

The Enciclopedia dell'Arte Medievale is a multivolume encyclopedia with good bibliographies and color plates. Art Reference [N5965.E5 1993]

See also the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia and print edition (Art Reference [BX841 .C25]) and New Catholic Encyclopedia (Davis Reference) for background on saints, iconography, patrons (e.g. popes, etc.).


Articles on your topic:

To locate articles in journals, there are numerous options on the Libraries' Articles Databases page:

Art Full Text for citations to articles, full text articles are available from 1997 to the present.

Bibliography of the History of Art for citations and abstracts of articles, books, exhibition catalogs, etc. but not the full article. The most scholarly art history database.

IBZ Online

International Medieval Bibliography - This bibliography of the European Middle Ages (c. 450-1500) has been produced in print form since 1968 by the International Medieval Institute (University of Leeds). Coverage is drawn from over 4,000 periodicals as well as from miscellaneous collections of conference proceedings, essay collections, and Festschriften.

ITER: Gateway to the Middle Ages for all aspects of the Middle Ages, not just its artistic; important for background information for art topics.

The Royal Historical Society Bibliography provides bibliographic data on historical writing dealing with the British Isles, and with the British empire and commonwealth, during all periods for which written documentation is available - from 55BC to the present.

ARTstor provides curated collections of art images and associated data for noncommercial and scholarly, non-profit educational use.

Bible in English (searchable) on E-Indexes page

CAMIO offers rights-cleared, high-quality art images for class projects, art history and studio art programs, course Web sites, lectures, presentations, and research resources.

International Center for Medieval Art includes a number of links, including images from illuminated manuscripts, and Biblical texts.

Labyrinth includes texts, images, bibliographies, links and a search engine.

Illuminated Manuscript Facsimiles at UNC Libraries, which is categorized by type. The print edition is available at the front desk in the Art Library.
