A very comprehensive guide to current gallery and museum listings, arts organizations, and individual artists. Also includes feature articles.

Cherokee Artist Directory
An online directory of Elder artists and the "Next generation" of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee.

NC ECHO Exploring Cultural Heritage Online
A virtual clearinghouse for NC's cultural heritage, including libraries, museums, arts councils, art centers and special collections. Consult the website's institution subject strengths list under the term "art."

New Deal/WPA Art in North Carolina
A useful private website for New Deal art, including some images.

North Carolina Artists
A small index to artists in NC, largely from clippings, announcements and other ephemera.

North Carolina Arts Council Arts Directory
Also includes touring artist directory, directory of local (by county) arts councils, and more.

North Carolina Periodicals Index (ECU)
An index to articles appearing in North Carolina periodicals, 1992 to date. Includes abstract. Search by keyword or specific index terms such as art museums, artists, artisans, painters, etc. Periodicals are located in the Joyner Library at East Carolina University (but may be located in other NC libraries as well.)

North Carolina Photographers through 1910

North Carolina Visual Art and Artists
Randall Library, UNC-Wilmington. A large searchable online index (by artist's name) which includes information on 20,000 artists, 1900-1986, with some information on earlier artists. The file itself must be consulted at UNC-W.

North Carolina Women Artists Archive
The North Carolina Women Artists Archive, on deposit at the Sloane Art Library, is a collection of material about women artists working in the state from ca. 1900 to 1950. About 80 artists are represented in the Archives, which are available for use in the Library. See also the National Museum of Women in the Arts which is planning a Database of Women Artists: http://www.nmwa.org/library/archives.asp.

Smithsonian American Art Museum Art Inventories and Archives of American Art Catalogs
Searchable by artist name or using North Carolina as a keyword. Inventories paintings by artists born or active up to 1914, sculpture from colonial to contemporary. Can be used to identify works in NC collections, works with NC as a subject, as well as known artists, titles. The Archives, Manuscripts and Photographs Catalog can be searched as well by switching catalogs.

A showcase of sourthern artists, browsable by state or discipline. Includes visual but also literary, performing, craft, and other arts, thumbnails and artist biographies.

Union List of Artist Names (Getty) For major artists.

Western North Carolina Artist Registry
Searchable by artist's name, medium or county of residence. 235 artists included. Sponsored by the Asheville Art Museum.

Western North Carolina Artists and Illustrators to 1950
A list of artists who "lived, worked, or visited western North Carolina and their association with this region resulted in a body of work depicting the mountains, the people and the way of life in the western part of the state. The list includes artists whose work falls largely before 1945."
