You can use the library's online
catalog to search for books, videos, and
journals related to your topic. There are four ways
to search the catalog:
- Keyword
- Title
- Author
- Subject Heading
Keyword: Search by Keyword if you are
unsure of the title or subject heading of a work. Be
sure to connect the words and phrases of your search
by using the boolean operators AND and OR.
For example:
india AND temple art
sculpture AND (southeast asia OR india)

Title: Enter the title of the work,
omitting the leading articles (a, an, or the). You
should include any subsequent articles that appear in
the title.
For example:
art of southeast asia
dictionary of art

Author: Authors may by an individual,
several individuals, an institution, or a
corporation. If you are searching for an individual,
be sure to search with the last name first.
For example:
virginia museum of fine arts
vogel, jean philippe

Subject Heading: You can search by subject
heading if you know the assigned Library of Congress
Subject Heading for your topic. If you don't know the
correct subject heading, do a keyword search and find
the subject headings in the catalog record.
For example:
Art, Buddhist--India
Art and religion--India

You can also search the catalogs at other
libraries and museums. The
Freer Gallery of Art Library has an extensive
collection of books, periodicals, and slides.
Unfortunately, slides and archives holdings are not
included in the online catalog; 1/3 of pre-1987
collection is also included.
