Secular Iconography - Dictionaries and Encyclopedias


Dictionnaire Iconologique : Les allégories et les symboles de Cesare Ripa et Jean Baudoin. Bar, Virginie and Dominique Brême. Dijon, Èditions, Faton, 1999.

Two parts, organized alphabetically. The first section, Le dictionnaires des allégories, presents each allegory under the term assigned to it by Jean Baudoin in his Iconologie of 1636. The second part, Le dictionnaire Des attibuts, describes objects often associated with mythological, allegorical, historical, or literary figures. Illustrated.

This dictionary has entries on saints, martyrs, mythical, biblical, and religious characters and episodes, and major symbols in art, arranged alphabetically. Interspersed with these entries are highlighted feature panels on the treatment in art of major themes and general topics (Adam and Eve, Landscape, Zodiac, and so on).

A dictionary chiefly of astrological and other occult symbols drawn from European, ancient, and Oriental sources. It has a Jungian bias and its value is limited by frequent speculations. A long introduction discusses the origin and nature of symbols; there is also a fairly extensive bibliography.

Dictionary divided into six sections, according to subject: Abstract signs, Animals, Artifacts, Earth and Sky, Human Body and Dress, Plants, and the final section, called "collectives", treats such subjects as the Four Seasons, Seven Liberal Arts, etc. Illustrated with black and white line drawings.

Barokthemen: Eine Auswahl con Verzeichnissen zur Ikonographie Des 17. and 18. Jahrhunderts. Pigler, Andor. 3 vols. 2nd ed. Budapest, Akademiai Kaido, 1974.

An indispensable reference tool, the first two volumes contain lists of representations of religious, mythological, legendary, and allegorical subjects. Despite the title of the book, Pigler also cites many examples from the 16th century and sometimes earlier. The 3rd volume contains many illustrations.
