A compendium of emblems, arranged thematically, taken from 47 emblem books. Indices of mottoes, images and meanings at back of main volume. Extensive bibliography of secondary sources, expanded in the supplement (which also lists reviews of the first edition).

Andreas Alciatus: Vol 1. The Latin Emblems; Vol 2. Emblems in Translation. ed. Peter Daly. Toronto, University of Toronto Press, 1985.

Alciati's books of emblems was the model for later works which united image and word.

Standard handbook, used by 17th century artists and poets to construct allegories. Numerous editions came out during the 17th and 18th centuries. Each allegory is listed with a choice of images.

This 5 volume series treats emblemata, mottoes, epigrams, and symbols specific to England from the Renaissance to 1800. Original sources.

In recent years, other emblem books have appeared in facsimile, a number of them published in such series as The Renaissance and the Gods, and The Philosophy of Images listed above in Section C. Another more recent series, Emblematisces Cabinet, by Georg Olms Verlag, Hildesheim and New York, also reprints historical emblem books. Most titles are located at Davis library.
