Entries organized on themes and mythological figures; representations include examples in the fine arts, music, dance, and literature of the past seven centuries. Subjects from classical history and post-Aeneid legends of early Rome not included, nor are minor myths. Lists 30,000 works of art. Headnotes begin each entry. The Subjects are described with commonly depicted elements of the myth. Some bibliography. Classical sources cited. Artists arranged chronologically, titles listed in English. Includes list sources and index of artists.

Lexicon Iconograpicum Mythologiae Classicae (LIMC). Zurich, Artemis Verlag, 1981-.

Covers Greek, Roman, and Etruscan mythology from post-Mycenaean period to the beginning of the Early Christian era. Each text volume has a comparison plate volume. Articles on mythological characters are divided into four parts : 1) Introduction; 2) Bibliography; 3) Catalog; 4) Iconographical commentary. Events in a character's life are arranged chronologically. Entries are in various languages, primarily French and German. An exhaustive work, indispensable to classicists.
