WORLD ART: a
guide to resources
If this is your first art history course, be sure to look
at the Sloane Art Library's basic research tutorial,
ARTIFAQ.
A major online encyclopedia of art is the
Grove Dictionary of Art Online which includes image links,
useful bibliographies, and covers the art of all time periods
and locations. It will be very useful to you in your research!
You can also find it on the
Article Databases and More section of the Libraries page.
There is also a print edition in the Art Library (36 volume
set--green books on index table in Reference area).
Gale Virtual Reference Library is a collection of 25 reference
books and encyclopedias in electronic format. The titles cover a
wide range of subjects, from the arts to medicine, and from
multicultural studies to social science. The "Arts and Humanities
Through the Eras" section contains many articles on various periods
in western art.
ARTstor provides curated collections of art images and
associated data for noncommercial and scholarly, non-profit
educational use.
CAMIO offers rights-cleared, high-quality art images for class
projects, art history and studio art programs, course Web sites,
lectures, presentations, and research resources. They can both be found on
the Libraries' Article Databases and
More page.
The survey book for your course (Honour and Fleming, The
Visual Arts: a History) on reserve in the Art Library
includes an illustrated glossary of art terms, and an extensive
bibliography ("further reading") that will lead you to more
information. You'll find earlier editions of this book
(published in 1992, 1995 and 2000) and other general surveys
of art in the N5300s on the 2nd floor of the Art Library.
Most of these can be checked out.
The Art Reference section (books with red tape on spine)
on the 1st floor includes many art dictionaries, dictionaries of
symbols and images, museum collection catalogs, biographical
dictionaries of artists, and more. These books must be consulted
in the Art Library but feel free to make photocopies or scan. We
have color and b&w copiers and a scanner for you to use.
Don't hesitate to ask for help!
