How do I place items on reserve?

Copyright Concerns
Copying excerpts from copyrighted works for library course reserves must comply with the provisions of the Copyright Law. We must ask that you give us your assurance that the copies you put on reserve meet this standard. Please review the Library's guidelines below to make sure your request that materials be placed on reserve complies with them. Thank you for your cooperation.

Photocopying for reserve use
The library may, when requested by a faculty member, accept a single copy for placement on reserve of a chapter, an article, a short story, a graph, chart, or picture, a short poem, or a short essay, provided such copying conforms to the "Fair Use" provisions of the Copyright Law.

The faculty member may supply up to four additional copies of such materials (excluding copyrighted workbooks, tests, and answer sheets) provided the following guidelines are met:

  1. The amount of the material is reasonable in relation to the total amount of material assigned for the course taking into account the nature of the course, its subject matter, and level;
  2. The number of copies is reasonable in light of the number of students enrolled in the course (no more than five copies may be accepted);
  3. The material will be stamped by the Library with a notice of copyright;
  4. The effect of photocopying the material is not detrimental to the market for the work;
  5. The decision to use the work and the moment of its use for teaching effectiveness are so close in the time that I would be unreasonable to expect a timely reply to a request for permission.

Such multiple copies are and remain the property of the faculty member who is responsible for complying with the Copyright Law. In accepting multiple copies for reserve purposes, the Library will assume that the copy or copies have been made in accordance with the "Fair Use" provisions of the law.

Any reuse for subsequent course reserve of these materials may constitute an infringement of the Copyright Law. It is the faculty member's responsibility to obtain permission of the copyright holder if permission is required (sample forms are available in the Library) or to provide a written assurance to the Library, when requesting that such copies remain on reserve for successive semesters, that he or she believes the copying to be in compliance with the Copyright Law.
