Couch Biology Library: Botany Theses and Dissertations

A List of Dissertations and Graduate Theses in Botany
Completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1912–2005

Compiled by
Jessica Kilfoil, William R. Burk, and Elizabeth A. Appleton
John N. Couch Biology Library—Botany Section, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

This list provides bibliographical citations, with the names of major advisors, of nearly four hundred dissertations and theses written by graduate students in the Department of Botany at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The list also includes selected titles written on botany after the Department of Biology was established in 1982. It also serves as a record of the print holdings of graduate theses and dissertations located in the John N. Couch Biology Library-Botany Section. In compiling the list, we bring up to date earlier efforts of Godfrey, Green and Pierson (1947), and of the staff of the Humanities Division at the University of North Carolina Library (1960) in documenting graduate work at the university. Bibliographic information was verified for each title by looking at the volume itself. If the date of the dissertation or thesis differs from the date of the student's graduation, the latter appears in parentheses.

Appended to this list is a selected list of Master of Science papers or theses that students wrote for the Department of Botany and later the Department of Biology. The Department of Botany adopted the M.S. degree to its graduate program in 1969 (Jones, 1970). The department typically waived the requirement of writing a thesis for the M.S.; however, nearly sixty students wrote papers in botany based on their research. Of these, two papers are archived in the library.
