The Forest History Society has posted: “A Pictorial Album of the Naval-Stores Industry,” USDA, 1937, (http://www.foresthistory.org/Research/Galleries/Naval_Stores_Album_Gallery/index.htm) that illustrates the tools and techniques involved in the turpentining process from gum collection to distillation. While not exclusively focused on North Carolina, it does a good job of conveying working conditions throughout the South.
