UNC Librarians Honored by Library Journal as “Movers & Shakers”

Librarians Chad Haefele and Emily King have been named by Library Journal as “Movers & Shakers” of 2011.

They were cited for leading development of the alternate reality game “Should Brandon and Nicole Get Engaged (ShBANGE),” played out in 2010 on the UNC campus.

ShBANGE was part of UNC’s Games4Learning (G4L), a campus-wide interdisciplinary initiative which examines the role games can play in the curriculum. ShBANGE was designed to help undergraduates learn to communicate better in relationships.

Both honorees are at the forefront of the Library’s use of technology for instruction and service delivery. Haefele is Emerging Technologies Librarian, based in the Research and Instructional Services department of Davis Library. King is Coordinator of E-Learning Services in the Reference and Instruction department of the R.B. House Undergraduate Library.

“This is well-deserved recognition for two librarians who have a passion for integrating technology, library services, and learning,” said Sarah Michalak, University Librarian and Associate Provost for University Libraries.

In 2009, UNC librarian Pam Sessoms, now Director of the Undergraduate Library at UNC, was named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker for her work on the development of LibraryH3lp, a virtual reference tool.
