Do textbook publishers dictate what’s taught in the classroom? What are the implications of using digital textbooks? Is a state textbook commission still necessary?

The status and future of textbooks in North Carolina will be the topic of a panel discussion Nov. 16 at the Wilson Special Collections Library. The event is free and open to the public.

The moderator will be UNC School of Education Dean Bill McDiarmid (UNC ’69). Panelists will be:

• Charles Gaffigan, principal of East McDowell Junior High in Marion and co-chair of the North Carolina Textbook Commission;
• Angela Quick, deputy chief academic officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction; and
• Michele Woodson, principal of Pleasant Grove Elementary in Burlington and consultant on a North Carolina textbook.

The discussion will coincide with the exhibition Curriculum and Controversy: Two Centuries of Textbooks in North Carolina, on view in Wilson Library’s North Carolina Collection Gallery through Jan. 31, 2012.
