The end of the Maya Long Count calendar cycle on Dec. 21, 2012, is the inspiration for a free public symposium at UNC on Oct. 25 and 26. “13 Bak’tun: New Maya Perspectives in 2012” will place the 2012 date within a larger historical and cultural context that includes the voices of Maya people.

The events for the symposium are free and open to the public. The website maya2012.unc.edu contains complete schedule information. Registration is recommended but not required.

The Maya word bak’tun signifies a calendar cycle of 400 years of 360 days. Ancient inscriptions indicate that once the 13th bak’tun is reached, the cycle starts over.

Exhibits

The symposium will include two exhibits. Ancient and Living Maya in the 19th and 20th Centuries: Archaeological Discovery, Literary Voice, and Political Struggle will open Oct. 8 in the Wilson Special Collections Library and will be on view in the Melba Remig Saltarelli Exhibit Room through Jan. 27, 2013. The exhibit features Maya materials from the Rare Book Collection’s George E. and Melinda Y. Stuart Collection.

Ancient and Living Maya Through the Photographic Lens will be on view from Sept. 18 through Dec. 14 in the FedEx Global Education Center. The exhibit will feature twenty large images of Maya people and sites, as well as a display of Maya garments and textiles. National Geographic staff members took the photographs while on assignment from the 1950s onward.

Symposium keynote and highlights

A keynote address by Victor Montejo, a Maya Pop’ti novelist, poet, and scholar from Guatemala. 10 a.m. Program | Pleasants Family Assembly Room
Free and open to the public

Civil War currency will be the topic of a June 2 program at the Wilson Special Collections Library. Participants who bring samples of Civil War currency will also have the opportunity for experts to evaluate their items.

The free public program will begin at 10 a.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room. Registration will open at 9:30 a.m.

Wendell Wolka will deliver the keynote speech, “And the World Turned Upside Down: The Effect of the Civil War on the Paper Money of the United States both North and South.” Wolka writes and teaches about numismatics. He is a governor of the American Numismatic Association and is governor and past president of the Society of Paper Money Collectors.

Other topics and speakers will be:

Fractional paper money, issued by the federal government to ease the shortage of circulating coins (Dennis Edens, vice president of the Raleigh Coin Club);

Printers who produced Civil War paper money, with a focus on North Carolina’s state and private issues (Jerry Roughton, co-publisher of the North Carolina Numismatic Scrapbook, and author of several books about North Carolina numismatics); and

Counterfeiting and its effects on the war and the Southern economy (Bob Schreiner, past president of the North Carolina Numismatic Association, and author of several articles on obsolete paper money).

At 1 p.m., local experts, along with some of the speakers, will examine notes, coins, and other Civil War money items brought by attendees. The experts will evaluate currency, but not provide appraisals.

The event is sponsored by the North Carolina Collection, the Friends of the Library, the Society of Paper Money Collectors, the North Carolina Numismatic Association, and the Raleigh Coin Club.

The program continues the Wilson Special Collection Library’s series of programs related to the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. In 2012, Wilson Library launched The Civil War Day by Day, a blog that presents one document each day related to the corresponding day of the war. An exhibition about the Civil War in memory is planned for 2015.

An exhibit in the Wilson Special Collections Library will tell the stories of black families and communities in the South, and will encourage African American families to partner with the Library in preserving their family history.

Southern Roots, Enduring Bonds: African American Families in North Carolina will be on view in the Southern Historical Collection (4th floor) March 20 through July 1, 2012. It will mark the launch of the African American Family Documentation Initiative in the Southern Historical Collection (SHC).

The focal point of the exhibit will be photographs, letters, and documents from the newly acquired Lewis Family Collection. Pioneering broadcaster J.D. Lewis was North Carolina’s first African American radio announcer, hired at WRAL in 1947. For nearly five decades, he was a leading local figure on radio and television, including as host of “Teenage Frolic,” a popular weekly dance program that debuted in 1958 on WRAL television.

Lewis’s daughter, Yvonne Lewis Holley, and her family chose to donate their father’s papers to the SHC in order to help preserve their family legacy.

“The boxes in our basement were filled with newsclippings, letters, photographs, and recordings, many from the 1950s and 1960s,” said Holley. “We wanted to make sure that these materials would go to an institution and actually be used by students, scholars, and the general public, and not just sit in boxes.”

Also on exhibit will be items relating to Civil Rights activist Floyd McKissick and his family, and archival photographs, letters, and news clippings related to African American families in Durham, Raleigh, and across North Carolina.

SHC archivist Holly Smith is the initiative coordinator and part of the team organizing the exhibit. She said she hopes North Carolina’s African American families will recognize the depth of the Library’s commitment to caring for family treasures and making them available for students and scholars to learn from.

“The University has a duty and obligation to the surrounding community to preserve the history of the people who worked, slaved, and labored in this area,” said Smith.

To learn more about the African American Family Documentation Initiative, contact Smith in the Southern Historical Collection at (919) 962-1345 or email wilsonlibrary@unc.edu.
