A weekend leak in Venable Hall has closed some areas of the Kenan Science Library.

Until further notice, Kenan Science Library is operating with reduced seating. Study room G301K is also unavailable.

The leak did not damage any library materials.

A leak from a third-floor drinking fountain sent water through parts of Davis Library on Sunday, damaging books and dampening carpets and walls.

As of Monday morning, parts of the first, second and third floors and the lower level remained closed for drying and recovery operations. Many public computers in the information commons area of the first floor have been moved and are being tested for damage.

Patrons are asked to remain out of closed areas in order to help facilitate recovery. Additional leaks or damage may be reported to the Circulation Desk on the main floor.

Updates will be posted here as more information becomes available about the extent of damage and the expected clean-up operations.

UPDATE: On the second floor: the reading area with the basketball photos is open for use, as are tables on the east and west ends of the floor, and the instructional labs in rooms 246 and 247. Follow signage to access these areas. Power is not available at many of the tables.

We expect clean-up to last for several weeks at least. Workers will remove and dry carpet and will need to replace drywall in several areas. Fans must remain running until everything is dry, in order to prevent mold growth. We apologize for the inconvenience.

UPDATE: Odum Institute construction will begin Monday, Feb. 11.

Construction will begin in Davis Library in early February to prepare office, computing, and teaching space for the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science. The Institute will relocate in 2013 from Manning Hall.

Demolition and construction are likely to cause noise and disruption throughout the semester on the southeast corner of the library’s second floor, possibly carrying to other areas. Access to library materials and computers will not be affected. Most seating on the second floor will remain accessible.

The Library is coordinating with contractors to minimize disruption. Work will generally end by 7 p.m. to permit quiet evening study. No work will take place during high-use periods, such as mid-terms and finals.

The move builds on existing close relationships between the nation’s oldest social science research institute and the Library. The organizations offer complementary services and instruction in areas such as geographic information systems and data management services. Researchers in many disciplines regularly consult with staff from both organizations.

During the outage, it will not be possible to submit new interlibrary loan (ILL) or document delivery requests, view articles that have been delivered electronically, or renew materials borrowed from other libraries.

Library staff will not be able to view records or process requests during the outage.

Microforms will relocate to the lower level of Davis Library.

The Microforms Collection will relocate from the second floor to the lower level of Davis Library. Moving will begin on Monday, Aug. 6, and will continue for approximately one week.

The move will transfer Davis Library’s entire collection of microforms—along with microform reader/printers and scanners—to the lower level. During the move period, the Microforms Collection will be unavailable for use.

Noise and activity may cause temporary disruptions on the second and first floors. The upper floors of Davis Library will continue to offer quiet study space throughout the summer.

Future access to the collections will be via sign-in at the Reference Desk on the main level.

All levels of Wilson Library have re-opened following a year-long project to install sprinklers in the special collections stacks. The project, which began last April, had limited access to some special collections materials.

Although installation work will continue for several weeks, the Library has returned all special collections materials to regular stack locations and has removed protective plastic layers. Users may request Wilson Library materials through the standard registration and request process.

Funding to install the sprinklers came through a grant from the Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections program of the National Endowment for the Humanities and by previous state appropriations to the University for repairs and renovations.

The sprinklers provide long-needed fire suppression capabilities for the rare, unique, and largely irreplaceable research materials housed in one of UNC’s landmark buildings.

Access to the upper floor of the R.B. House Undergraduate Library will be limited this summer due to the installation of new carpeting.

The work will begin Thursday, May 17, and should last approximately three weeks.

One half of the upper floor will be blocked from public access at a time, while the other side will stay open for use. Library staff will page materials from closed areas upon request. All other areas of the Undergraduate Library will remain open. Other UNC libraries also remain open on a summer schedule.

Update (May 14, 2012): Deletion of old records has now been completed. The Library was able to retain all requests submitted after July 1, 2006. System upgrades will continue through May and may result in temporary down times.

The Library will upgrade software and system hardware for the Carolina BLU Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services during the month of May 2012.

Carolina BLU services may not be available at certain times during the upgrade. Down times will be posted to Carolina BLU webpages. Users may also experience slow response times.

Once complete, the upgrades should improve system speed and will eventually allow for an easier request interface.

Deletion of Old Records

As part of the upgrade, the Library must delete loan requests submitted prior to July 1, 2007 2006 from its database. Once deleted, these requests will not appear in any of the “View” lists in your Carolina BLU account.

If you wish to retain your older request history, you should log in to your account and view “All Requests.” Print the list or copy and paste it into a spreadsheet for your records.
