Update: This year’s total: <del>2,650</del> 2,870 books. Thank you, everyone!

For the fourth consecutive year, UNC’s libraries are partnering with campus departments to collect children’s books for the Book Fairy, an organization that donates books to the Pediatric Oncology Clinic at UNC Hospitals.

The drive will run Nov. 2 through Dec. 6, 2012. All new or gently-used books for ages one through mid-teen are welcome. The need is especially great for English and Spanish-language board books, the sturdy picture books made for young children. Also needed are books featuring children and families of many cultures.

Friends of the Library will wrap up the drive by accepting donated books at the annual Winter Stories program on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m., in the lobby of Wilson Library.

The Bull’s Head Bookshop will offer a 25 percent discount on children’s books purchased for donation to the book drive. At the time of purchase simply mention the phrase “Book Fairy” to the staff.

Have you considered joining the Friends of the Library at UNC? Your gift could go twice as far if you join by the end of the year.

A generous match challenge from longtime Library supporter Howard Holsenbeck will add $100 to the first 100 new Friends memberships of at least $100 each. Gifts must be made by Dec. 31, 2011.

Although it sounds complicated, the idea is simple. “Giving to the Library is one of the best investments I’ve ever made,” said Holsenbeck, a member of the UNC class of 1963. “I’d like to encourage others to join me.”

Holsenbeck’s support for the Library reaches back to the year of his graduation, when he sent $50 to what he called “the most important part of the University.” Since then he has made a gift every single year, often several a year, to support the collections of the University Library. A previous Holsenbeck challenge in 2010 doubled 10 gifts of $1,000 from new donors to the Library.

“Howard Holsenbeck epitomizes the generosity of our Friends of the Library,” said University Librarian Sarah Michalak. “He wants to share the sense of purpose and commitment with others by encouraging them to give to the Library, too.”

Friends of the Library at all levels receive the biannual magazine Windows and advance notification of Library events and exhibits. Friends also receive a library borrower’s card that gives access to resources in any campus library (minimum annual gift of $25). At higher giving levels, building and endowment naming opportunities are available.

You may make a gift to the Library at any time online, or contact Peggy Myers, Director of Library Development, pmyers@email.unc.edu, (919) 843-5651.

The lives of Chang and Eng Bunker, the original Siamese twins, have been a source of fascination for nearly two centuries.

On Dec. 6, playwright Philip Kan Gotanda will speak about his new play, I Dream of Chang and Eng, which reimagines the remarkable lives of the pair.

The program will also feature presentations and readings from the play by undergraduate students who have researched the lives of Chang and Eng through documents in the Wilson Special Collections Library. A display of materials curated by the students will be on view during the event.

Chang and Eng were born in 1811 in Siam (now Thailand). As teenagers, they traveled the Americas and Europe, becoming popular celebrities. The pair eventually settled in North Carolina as gentlemen farmers, marrying sisters Adelaide and Sarah Yates of Wilkes County, and ultimately fathering 21 children between them. Chang and Eng died within hours of each other in 1874.

I Dream of Chang and Eng premiered in Berkeley, Ca., in March. Gotanda is known especially for his sensitive explorations of the lives of Asian Americans in both his many plays and as a filmmaker. He has been artist in residence at Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. His works have been produced by theaters across the country, including the American Conservatory Theater and the New York Shakespeare Festival.

Gotanda comes to UNC at the invitation of Heidi Kim, assistant professor of English and comparative literature, and the instructor for English 265 Honors, “Literature and Race, Literature and Ethnicity.”

“Philip is unquestionably one of the foundational and most influential figures in Asian American theatre,” said Kim. “He’s been incredibly generous with my students and has added immeasurably to their learning.”

Kim’s students used materials about the Bunkers and their era from the North Carolina Collection and Southern Historical Collection in Wilson Library. Their display and presentations will highlight letters and documents, pamphlets, photographs, and museum objects.

The program is sponsored by the North Carolina Collection, Southern Historical Collection, and the Friends of the Library.

Funding for Gotanda’s visit comes from the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost through the Performing Arts Special Activities Fund, the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, and Honors Carolina.
