Sir Walter Raleigh To Be Topic of Lecture April 14

Sir Walter Raleigh will be the topic of a program April 14 in Wilson Library. Mark Nicholls will discuss his new book, “Sir Walter Raleigh: In Life and Legend” (co-authored with Penry Williams).

The free public program will begin at 5:45 p.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room. A reception and small exhibit of items from the Library’s Sir Walter Raleigh Collection will precede the talk at 5 p.m. in the main lobby. Members of UNC Student Organizations: Learn How To Preserve Your Own History April 6

Students are invited to join UNC archivists on April 6 for a special viewing of the exhibit “From Di-Phis to Loreleis: A History of Student Organizations at UNC” and to get tips on how student groups can preserve their own history.

The event will run from 2 to 4 p.m. in the North Carolina Collection Gallery of Wilson Library. Students may drop in at any time. Light refreshments will be served. Continue reading »

Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies To Be Topic of Lecture April 7

The history and lore of the two oldest student organizations at UNC-Chapel Hill will be the topic of a lecture by UNC alumnus Kevin Cherry on April 7, in the Wilson Special Collections Library. “And They Talked—Always They Talked: 215 Years of the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies” will be the 2011 Gladys Hall Coates University History Lecture.

The program will begin at 5:45 p.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room. A reception, a viewing of the exhibit “From Di-Phis to Loreleis: A History of Student Organizations at UNC,” and an a cappella performance by the all-female group The Loreleis will precede the talk at 5 p.m. in the North Carolina Collection Gallery. American Indian Pottery Demonstration and Panel Discussion Nov. 10

A demonstration of traditional Catawba pottery-making and a panel discussion on the topic of “American Indians in 21st-Century North Carolina” will take place Nov. 10, 2010 at the Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
