<p>The UNC academic and research community can learn about the benefits of open access through free public events on campus to mark <a href="http://www.openaccessweek.org/" target="_blank">Open Access Week</a> (Oct. 22-28).</p>
<p>The theme of Open Access Week 2012 is “Set the Default to Open Access.” Open Access (OA) refers to mechanisms that make scholarly publications freely available to researchers and the public.</p>

<strong><em>Who Owns Your Work: Copyright and Access  </em></strong><br />
10-11:30 a.m., followed by brown-bag lunch<br />
Pleasants Family Assembly Room, <a href="http://www.lib.unc.edu/wilson/" target="_blank">Wilson Library </a></p>
<p><a href="https://louisville.edu/bucksforbrains/faculty/buttler" target="_blank">Dwayne Buttler</a>, a lawyer who holds an endowed chair in intellectual property at the University of Louisville Libraries, will deliver a talk, then remain for informal conversation and a brown-bag lunch.  Buttler is a frequent speaker and author about copyright in the library and higher education context. His most recent publication, &#8220;Intimacy Gone Awry: Copyright and Special Collections,&#8221; was published in the <em>Journal of Academic Library Administration</em>.</p>

<strong><em>Open Access Week 2012 Kick-Off Webcast, broadcast from the World Bank</em></strong><br />

<a href="http://hsl.lib.unc.edu/" target="_blank">Health Sciences Library</a>, Room 527</p>
<p><a href="http://www.arl.org/sparc/" target="_blank">SPARC</a> and the <a href="http://www.worldbank.org/" target="_blank">World Bank</a> will co-sponsor this <a href="http://live.worldbank.org/world-bank-and-sparc-announce-open-access-week-2012-liveblog-webcast" target="_blank">live webcast and liveblog event</a>. Students, researchers, policy makers, and others will discuss their perspectives on open access and its impact on their work. The World Bank was recently <a href="http://www.arl.org/sparc/media/World_Bank_SPARC_Innovator.shtml" target="_blank">named a SPARC Innovator</a> for its open access practices. The event will be recorded.</p>

<p><a href="Open Access Week" target="_blank">Open Access Week</a> is organized by the <a href="http://www.arl.org/sparc/" target="_blank">Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition </a>(SPARC) in order to encourage wider participation in Open Access publishing and promote understanding of related issues.</p>
<p>In addition to lectures and a faculty panel, the UNC Libraries have created and maintained an <a href="http://guides.lib.unc.edu/content.php?pid=121319&amp;sid=1043441" target="_blank">informational guide to OA</a>, including news, guidance for faculty members, and information about the Libraries’ <a href="http://guides.lib.unc.edu/content.php?pid=121319&amp;sid=1262572" target="_blank">OA Fund</a>. The fund assists UNC faculty, post-doctoral researchers, graduate and professional students, and UNC Hospitals staff without other funds to cover open access publication fees<strong>.</strong></p>
