Carol Jenkins, director of UNC’s Health Sciences Library, has announced her retirement after 26 years at the helm of one of the nation’s leading health and medical libraries. Her final day on the job will be June 30, 2013.

“Carol leaves a legacy of leadership and innovation,” said University Librarian and Associate Provost for University Libraries Sarah Michalak. “Her outstanding career and tireless passion have advanced the provision of health information on campus, across the state, around the country, and throughout the world.”

Only the third professional librarian to lead the Health Sciences Library (HSL), Jenkins oversaw numerous developments. Under her leadership, the HSL became one of the first libraries to provide access to MEDLINE and other key databases to users anywhere on campus. During her tenure, the HSL instituted the AHEC Digital Library, providing online books, journals, and databases to health professionals across the state, and NC Health Info, a unique consumer database of authoritative health sources and local resources.

At UNC, Jenkins also oversaw and extensive renovation of the Health Sciences Library in 2005, adding spaces and technology to meet changing needs and expectations of library users.

In 2010 the HSL was administratively joined with the University Library. Jenkins has co-chaired a new joint strategic planning process that focuses on a new vision for twenty-first-century library services.

Jenkins’s awards and accomplishments include serving as president of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (2001) and the Medical Library Association (2002), and leading two programs to identify and mentor future library leaders. She was a founding member of BRIDGES, a program begun at UNC to prepare women for academic administrative leadership.

In recognition of her career contributions, Jenkins recently received two prestigious professional awards: the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries’ Cornerstone Award in 2010 and the Medical Library Association’s Marcia C. Noyes Award in 2011. She is a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals and a Lifetime Fellow of the Medical Library Association.

In an email to HSL librarians and staff Jenkins wrote, “One of the accomplishments of which I am most proud is being able to recruit and work with such a wonderful staff.”

Jim Curtis, deputy director of the HSL, will serve as interim director until a replacement is named.

Nearly 800 journal articles by UNC researchers now enjoy greater visibility thanks to a collaboration between UNC’s library and open access biology and medicine publisher BioMed Central.

Every time BioMed Central publishes an article by a UNC affiliate, the article loads automatically to the Library’s Carolina Digital Repository (CDR). The CDR compiles, safeguards, and provides access to the research of UNC faculty and students.

Republishing in the CDR provides an extra layer of security, according to project manager Jill Sexton. It also allows the CDR to capture and share a more extensive picture of research activities at UNC, and to capitalize on the Library’s investments in open access publishing.

In addition to full text of the articles, BioMed Central shares documents related to the articles, such as surveys, pamphlets, and data sets. The CDR preserves these items along with the articles in a growing collection that already contains more than 2,000 items.

The automatic transfer takes place behind the scenes using a technology called Simple Web-Service Offering Repository Deposit (SWORD).

BioMed Central publishes 242 peer-reviewed open access journals, meaning that they are freely available world-wide to researchers and the public. UNC authors enjoy discounted publication fees with BioMed Central, thanks to the Library’s institutional membership in the organization.

The UNC Library is eager to work with additional publishers interested in piloting the SWORD protocol, says Sexton.

To learn more about how the CDR can help manage research outputs or about the transfer of articles from BioMed Central, contact Sexton at jill@email.unc.edu.

Some science libraries and services will be relocated on the UNC campus during the summer of 2011.

The moves are a response to the serious budget situation confronting the Library and the campus. They also reflect efforts to economize while still preserving priorities conveyed by faculty and students through surveys, focus groups, interviews, and discussions during the spring semester.

“We heard repeatedly about the need to acquire digital content, while also ensuring that print collections would be as available as possible for in-person browsing,” said University Librarian Sarah Michalak. “Also, that if we needed to move collections, we should do our best to keep science materials together.”

As a result of these conversations, the Library has planned the following:

The collections of the Brauer Math/Physics Library and the Geological Sciences Library will relocate to expanded browseable stacks in Wilson Library. Materials will be consolidated with the biology and chemistry collections already in Wilson Library, providing the opportunity for interdisciplinary browsing. The science collections are accessible from the South Road entrance to Wilson Library, opposite the Bell Tower.

Hours for the science collections in Wilson Library will be: Mon.-Thurs., 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Fri., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sat. 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Sun. 1 -6 p.m. This represents an increase in staffed hours over any of the current science libraries, gained from efficiencies in staffing only a single browsing point.

The campus delivery (Carolina BLU) program will deliver books to faculty campus boxes, and to the library of choice for students. High-impact undergraduate science collections will remain in the Undergraduate Library, which also provides reserves services in all disciplines.

The science librarians will have home offices in the newly opened Kenan Science Library in Venable Hall. They will continue to serve the departments in their areas of expertise with consultations, instruction, collection development, and customized services for the departments they work with.

The Library has purchased expanded backfiles of 42 e-journals in physics and the physical sciences from the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the Institute of Physics (IOP), National Research Council (Canada), and Elsevier.

Relocation of and access to science collections in Wilson Library will not be affected by the recently announced installation of sprinklers in the Wilson Library special collections stacks during 2011-12.

For more information about science libraries on the UNC campus, contact Carol Hunter, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Services: (919) 962-1301, cfhunter@email.unc.edu.

Plans must conform to NSF data sharing policy and should describe what best practices or standards will be used to organize data and how data will be shared.

The UNC Libraries’ Data Management Committee has created a Research Data Toolkit that explains the new requirements and provides guidance to UNC researchers on drafting a plan.

The Toolkit includes:

Information and FAQ about NSF Data Management Plan requirement

Sample plans from UNC’s Odum Institute for Research in Social Science

A decision-making checklist to assess storage needs

A directory of data repositories

A listing of metadata standards by discipline

A directory of campus units and resources to assist researchers

Basic principles of confidential data protection

Listings of upcoming courses and recordings of previous data management workshops

The site will eventually include boilerplate language and additional sample plans. Directory listings will also be expanded and updated.

The committee has also established dataplan@listserv.unc.edu to answer researcher questions in partnership with the Odum Institute and the UNC Office of Sponsored Research.

For questions about the Research Data Toolkit, contact Barrie Hayes, Health Sciences Library (bhayes@email.unc.edu) or Michele Hayslett, Davis Library (michele_hayslett@unc.edu).
