B. Article Databases
ARI
Bibliographical Database for Astronomical References (ARIBIB) (1979-2000)
ARIBIB contains a free database based on volumes 26-73 of
Astronomy and
Astrophysics Abstracts. The website also provides more limited access to earlier
volumes of
Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts (1968-1979), volumes
1-68 of
Astronomischer Jahresbericht (1899-1968), and some earlier
astronomical literature.
ISI Web of
Science (1980-present)
Including Science Citation Index Expanded,
the ISI Citation Databases provide cited reference searching of the scholarly
literature in many disciplines.
INSPEC
(1898-present)
INSPEC is the world's largest bibliographic database for the
fields of physics, electrical engineering and electronics, computers and
control engineering, and information technology. Its coverage also includes many
astronomy journals.
NASA Astrophysics Data System
The Digital Library for Physics, Astrophysics, and Instrumentation, the Astrophysics
Data System (ADS) is a NASA-funded project which maintains searchable bibliographic
databases for these fields and provides full-text scans of some scholarly
astronomical literature.

II. PRINT RESOURCES (located in the
Brauer Math/Physics Library)
A. Indexes and Abstracts
Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts (1969-2000)
This source provides abstracts for the literature of astronomy, astrophysics,
and related fields in relevant publications throughout the world. Most of its
contents are available online through the
ARI
Bibliographical Database for Astronomical References (ARIBIB).
Catalogue of Scientific Papers, 1800-1900; Subject Index
MP Z7403.R881 v. 2-3
These volumes provides subject access to nineteenth century
scholarly work in physics, including some topics relevant to astronomy.
No author index is available.
Physics Abstracts (1941-present)
A continuation of
Science Abstracts, later volumes of this source
are accessible electronically through
INSPEC.
Science Abstracts (1898-1940)
This source covers journal articles, conference proceedings, and
published reports in physics and related fields. Each issue contains subject
and author indexes, with cumulative indexes available in separate volumes.
The title is continued by
Physics Abstracts.
B. Reference Sources
The Astronomical Almanac MP REF QB8.U1 2003 and 2004
This book provides current and accurate astronomical data for observing and
other general uses.
Cambridge Dictionary of Astronomy MP REF QB14.M55 2001
This dictionary defines over 3000 terms, names, and abbreviations used in the past
and present in both amateur and professional astronomy.
Encyclopedia of Planetary Sciences MP REF QB600.2.E53 1997
Designed for a broad audience, this single-volume encyclopedia attempts to
provide comprehensive coverage of the planetary sciences.
Encyclopedia of Space Science and Technology MP REF QB497.E53 2003
This encyclopedia consists of nearly 80 articles about the technology and
scientific results of space exploration. The entries are written by people who
have been involved in space exploration and are highly technical.
History of Astronomy: an encyclopedia MP REF QB15.H624 1997
This encyclopedia provides historical overviews and biographies, and it
addresses the social history of astronomy, the history of observatories, and
astronomy in various national contexts. The focus is on the last three to four
hundred years, but brief articles covering earlier periods are also included.

C. Other Relevant Sites
History
of Astronomy (Germany)
The Online Books Page (University of Pennsylvania)
This source
provides links to approximately 70 free online books on astronomy topics.
The site also offers searching and browsing by title and author.
Planetary Data System (PDS)
(NASA)
The Planetary
Data System (PDS) provides scientific data from NASA planetary missions,
astronomical observations, and laboratory measurements.
SIMBAD, VIZIER, ALADIN(Centre de
Données astronomiques de Strasbourg)
This academic resource offers multiple
reference sites for Astronomy Research relevant to a wide range of skill levels.
The SIMBAD astronomical database is a great source for astronomical
objects outside the solar system. VIZIER offers the researcher
access to the most complete library of published astronomical catalogues and data
tables available on line. Finally, Aladin is as defined on the website:
"particularly useful for multi-spectral cross-identifications of astronomical
sources, observation, preparation, and quality control of new data sets."
Skyview: The Internet's Virtual
Telescope (NASA)
Skyview is a user-driven image generator that presents
customized images of any portion of the sky from a variety of surveys and in
seven wavelengths.
NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database
A good source for the researcher in search of data. The site boasts having at
least basic data for more than seven and a half million extragalactic sources and
gives more than 2.5 Million Bibliographic references. The NASA / IPAC extragalactic
database has searchable, downloadable data on red shift and extragalactic objects.
In addition to data, this database is home to a wealth of review articles, journal
abstracts, thesis abstracts, images, and term glossary.
