Disability Services and Access

The University Libraries are committed to providing access to their collections, resources, and services to all library users, including people with physical and learning disabilities.

Please inform us if you need any assistance in using the Library. if your needs are not met by the policies and procedures described here, please notify us. We will examine and, if necessary, extend our policies and procedures to accommodate your needs.

Parking and Building Access

Disability access is from the 1st floor of the building. To access this entrance, turn into Peabody Parking lot from Cameron Dr. Once in the parking lot, you will find disability parking right beneath the overhead walkway near the middle of the Phillips building. Upon entering the building, turn left and go to the end of the hall. The building's elevator will be on your left. The library is on the third floor of Phillips Hall. Exit the elevator on the third floor, turn right, and right again and the library is the first door on the right.

Personal Services

Upon entering the library, you will find the circulation desk directly in front of you. Our staff will be more than willing to answer any questions you may have and help in any way. Reference and Research Assistance

Reference and Research Assistance includes the following:

• Assistance in the use of online and print finding aids.
• Advice about access to specialized online information sources.
• Explanation and descriptions of sources of specialized information
• Help with bibliographic verification
• Telephone (call 962-2323), email or live chat assistance via AOL Instant Messanger Service (screenname:ScienceRefUNC) are available to aid in finding the status of an item in the online catalog.
• Retrieval of books from the Collection.
• Assistance with photocopying a limited number of pages.
• Special tours of the building by appointment
• Reference assistance is available at the circulation desk and by telephone (962-2323)

Finding and Using Library Materials

• Assistance in ascertaining the physical availability and retrieval of books and periodicals in the Brauer Math/Physics Library
• Assistance with photocopying a limited number of pages of books or periodicals from the Brauer Stacks
• Issuing proxy borrower cards. users with disabilities may acquire a proxy borrower's card from Davis library to enable another person to check out items for them. The user, not the proxy, is responsible for all items checked out on the card.
• Brauer library has two computers that are wheelchair accessible located on the first floor

Facilities and Assistive Technology

• Materials can be transfered to Davis Library's locked carrel (room 3052) for use on:
• Kurzweil 1000 software
• Zoomtext
• Jaws
• A scanner
• Closed Circuit Television
• The department of Disability Services provides keys and training in the use of this software and equipment. Keys are also available at the Davis Reference Desk and the Davis Circulation Desk.
