The Walter Royal Davis Library is a research library that serves UNC students, faculty and staff. It is also open to the general public. To ensure a pleasant and safe environment conducive to research and study, the Library has established the following policies regarding the use of its facilities and collections.
Animals. Only guide dogs and companion dogs that assist people with disabilities are allowed in the Library.
Bicycles, Scooters, Rollerskates, Rollerblades and Skateboards. The use of these items in Davis Library is prohibited.
Cameras. Use of photographic or video equipment is restricted. Individuals, classes, groups, or organizations desiring to film the Library or its staff or users must first get permission in the Library Administrative Office.
Cell Phones and Pagers. To preserve a quiet study environment, the Library requires library users to set cell phones and pagers on nonaudible signals. Cell phone calls may be made from the elevator lobbies, floors 3-8. Use of cell phones in the stacks, floors 1 and 2, and all other parts of the library is not allowed.
Children. Children are welcome, but those under 14 must have adult supervision at all times.
Computer Work Stations. Academic work has priority and use is limited to one hour if others are waiting. Access is limited to the options listed on the screen. No game playing, access to DOS, software installation, personal software, or web authoring are allowed.
Courtesy and Responsibility. All patrons using online and Internet resources are expected to show common courtesy and respect for both the privacy and sensibility of others since it is not possible to prevent other library patrons from observing online information or images they may find inappropriate.
Defacing the Library and its Materials, Equipment, and Furniture. Cutting, tearing, or defacing materials such as books, periodicals, microforms, and compact disks or tampering with computers or computer software or defacing equipment, furniture, or the building itself is prohibited.
Disruptive Behavior. Behavior that interferes with the appropriate use of the Library is not permitted. This includes excessive noise, altercations, theft, vandalism, inappropriate sexual behavior, and harassment of any kind. All such activities should be reported immediately to the Circulation Desk, who will contact Campus Police. Patrons identified as disruptive will be subject to sanction, including possible expulsion from the Library, University disciplinary action, being trespassed from the Library or being trespassed from all UNC libraries or the UNC campus.
Emergency Telephones. Special telephones have been installed so that emergencies can be reported as quickly as possible to the Circulation Desk. These red phones are located in the stacks, floors 3-8.
Fire Alarms. All patrons and staff should respond to all fire and emergency alarms by immediately exiting the building via the nearest emergency exit.
Food and Drink. Eating is not allowed in Davis Library. Drinks in re-closable, spill-proof containers are allowed in most locations. They are not permitted in the 3rd floor Computer Lab, the Information Commons, Electronic Reference, Electronic Documents, the Microforms Collection, or where photocopiers or computer or audiovisual equipment are located. Canned beverages and drinks in paper or styrofoam cups are not allowed. People who violate this policy will be asked to dispose of their food or drink or leave the Library.
Paging. The Library will use its public address system to page individual patrons only when there is a verifiable medical emergency.
Safety. The Library’s goal is always to optimize the safety and security of its users and staff. All statutes, regulations, and laws governing safety and behavior in a facility of the State of North Carolina and The University of North Carolina will apply, as understood by Library and University staff. Emergencies should be reported immediately to Library staff. For security, Davis Library is monitored by closed-circuit television.
Signs. Signs may be posted in two places in Davis Library. Personal notes and/or announcements may be posted on the bulletin board in the Davis foyer. This board is cleared every 24 hours. Academic or library-related announcements may be posted on the bulletin board adjacent to the Davis Circulation Desk, to the right of the Davis exit. All announcements on this board must be dated and approved by Library staff.
Solicitation. Solicitation is not permitted. Campus groups may be able to use the Davis foyer for noncash charitable collections under certain circumstances. See http://www.lib.unc.edu/aoffice/policies/charitable.html.
Smoking. Smoking in any part of Davis Library is forbidden by State law.
