Beginning January 2, at the request of the Davis Reference Department and with the agreement of other departmental libraries, Davis Cataloging will classify subject bibliographies with their particular subjects rather than in the Z's as in the past.

This means we will no longer class in the following ranges: Z1201-Z6620 and Z6626-Z8999

We will continue to use the Z schedule for Z1-Z1121 (library science, etc.) and Z6621-Z6625 (general manuscript catalogs).

Copy Cataloging Procedure. For materials classed in Z1201-Z6620 or Z6626-Z8999, do not use the LC supplied Z call number. Instead use the alternative class number (in the second $a of the 050). Complete the alternative call number by adding a cutter for the main entry and a date. Use the local cutter expansion tables to formulate the cutter. Check in Marion to verify that it fits with our existing shelflist cutters. The new number should be entered in the 090 field.

For materials in the above ranges coming through Copy Cataloging without an alternative call number route to Monographic Cataloging for subject classification. Mark the routing slip with something like "Z class?" in order to explain why the item is being shipped to Monographic.

This change in procedure does not apply to classed together monographic series.

This change applies to current cataloging only. Retrospective reclassification of older materials for the convenience of departmental librarians is not an option, and has been explained to them in terms of the negative impact such work has on the processing of current materials. Older materials were cataloged correctly according to the guidelines in place at the time. If you have problems with departmental staff requesting reclassification of older materials, send them to MJY! (The people, not the materials to be reclassed.)

Keep in mind that subject (including place) takes precedence over form in classing bibliographies and form or holding institution in classing catalogs so that only general bibliographies and catalogs should continue to be classed in Z. Periodical and manuscript bibliographies and catalogs should also be classed by subject if subject specific. Search DRAMARC by Z class number to establish appropriate (bracketed) class numbers A-Z if the cataloging copy for the book in hand provides only a Z number.
