Since Oct. 1, 2000, due to the progression of the Pinyin conversion project, Chinese records currently in the UNC online catalog have a mixture of romanization systems: Wade-Giles (WG) and Pinyin (PY). The former is the romanization system used to catalog Chinese materials before Oct. 1, 2000. The latter is the new romanization system that the Library of Congress officially adopted for cataloging Chinese materials beginning Oct. 1, 2000. Pinyin is the name of the official romanization system of the Peoples' Republic of China. Please also note that currently the Library catalog CANNOT display Chinese-Japanese-Korean (CJK) scripts. In order to locate CJK materials, users should use standard romanization systems to search the UNC catalog.
For Chinese records, because there are temporarily two ways a Chinese heading may appear in the Library catalog, it is necessary that users search both WG and PY systems to be sure to retrieve all occurrences. We hope all Chinese records in the Library catalog will be in Pinyin form by the end of 2002.
Before the library completes this conversion project, please be aware that the use of a Pinyin search key in the Library catalog may NOT produce records that have the bibliographic and holding information you need. The catalog may ONLY display reference records related to your search key.

Where there are no Pinyin bibliographic records for the search key, the Library catalog may instead retrieve a reference record related to the search key, which looks like this:

When you see such a display, please follow steps 1,2,3 above to complete the search. That is: 1) view the reference record, 2) copy WG form under "Used for", and 3) return to the search screen and use the WG form to search again.
Searching the Library catalog using both romanization systems is ONLY temporary. When the library completes converting Chinese records to Pinyin, the use of the WG system will become obsolete.
