Periodical Indexes for Japanese Studies

Zasshi kiji sakuin ( 雑誌記事索引 )
The Zasshi kiji sakuin is a searchable database of over 15,000 general interest, academic, and medical titles from the National Diet Library’s collection of periodicals. Zasshi Kiji Sakuin covers from 1948 to the present, while MagazinePlus includes data only back to 1975.

Web Oya
The Oya So-ichi Bunko is known for its strong collection of popular weekly, general interest, and women’s magazines. Web Oya lets you search about 400 different titles from 1988 to 1995. For wider coverage from 1868 to 1995, consult their print version in the Japanese Reference Collection.

NACSIS-IR
This collection of searchable databases from the National Institute of Informatics brings together a wide range of scholarly information. Most notably, you can use this resource to
1. search for academic theses written on a particular topic since 1957 (gakui ronbun sakuin de-tabe-su, GAKUI),
2. search Japanese academic journals (sometimes with full text available, in the gakujutsu zasshi mokuji sokuho- detabe-su, SOKUHO),
3. search for journal articles since 1948 (zasshi kiji sakuin, ZASSAKU)

NACSIS-ELS
This database provides the full-text of academic and conference publications in many disciplines, but is strong in the sciences, engineering, and medicine. A special viewer must be downloaded to view articles. The viewer is already installed in the East Asia Reading Room.

Statistics for Japanese Studies

Statistical materials for learning about Japan
An English-language guide to statistical information about Japan. It introduces major statistical materials on Japan written in English, or in both Japanese and English, in the form of printed publications and Internet information.

Guide to official statistics in Japan
Complied by the Statistics Bureau of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Provides explanation of government statistical system in Japan and detailed explanations of statistical resources (their purpose, contents, major topics and internet sites if available).

Provide downloadable statistical information from the Statistics Bureau and other statistical sources such as the Nihon to-kei nenkan in EXCEL format. This site also offers keyword searches of statistics available in Japan.

Nihon to-kei nenkan = Japan statistical yearbook日本統計年鑑
Exhaustive and systematic statistical resource. Contains around 750 types of statistical data in 27 categories and 50 charts and graphs. Each chapter provides both the original source for the statistics and the methodology fof the surveys. Excel and PDF versions can be downloaded. Categories are in English and Japanese. Library has the paper version from 1945 to the present.

Web Japan: Gateway for all Japanese information Updated monthly. Provides basic statistical information in English in a number of categories such as education, financial affairs, and vital statistics.
