Announcement (8-23-2002)
Taipei Donates to Campus Libraries

The Information Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Atlanta will donate 1,500 volumes of material about Taiwan to the Libraries at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on September 5, 2002. The Director of the Information Division, Ms. Alice Wang, will donate the material in a ceremony to be held on the UNC Chapel Hill campus. Director-General Maggie Tien will represent the Atlanta TECO office at the ceremony and Dr. Joe Hewitt, Associate Provost and University Librarian will accept the donation on behalf of the University. A reception will follow the ceremony.

These works, which were collected from various Taiwanese government agencies, universities, museums, and libraries cover a wide range of subjects that includes history, biography, Taiwan's political development, elections, women's studies, social sciences, economics, and education. Also included in the collection are maps, manuscripts, research reports, yearbooks, and the collected writings of former Taiwan president Chiang Ching-kuo. This impressive collection of books and other materials is the result of a joint effort by private and government institutions in Taiwan.

UNC-Chapel Hill is the nation's oldest public university. The University Libraries house over five million volumes and include over 150,000 Chinese-language materials. The Libraries began collecting Chinese-language materials in the 1960's and its collection has grown to be the largest of its kind in the southeast. The gift of these materials will greatly enhance the Libraries' current Taiwan studies collection and will benefit students, faculty, and visiting scholars in their research.
