Journals

All of the journals listed are available in Davis Library in both print and electronic formats with the exception of Film Journal International which is electronic only. While none of these journals are specific to Latin American cinema, they are all of high quality and will occasionally cover Latin American topics.

To use the print format, search the UNC Libraries Catalog to find location and availability.

To use e-journals, use the library's E-Journal Finder.

How do you distinguish different types of journals? Read this GUIDE.

Cineaste

Cineaste is billed as "America's leading magazine on the art & politics of the cinema." It is a high quality quarterly on par with Cinema Journal but with more of a magazine format. The articles are in-depth, serious studies of cinema. Notable features are film and book reviews and interviews.

Cinema Journal

This journal is published quarterly by the Society for Cinema and Media Studies out of the University of Texas Austin. Articles in this publication are academic and in depth in nature. This is not the place to look for simple film reviews. Think of this source as comparable to academic quarterlies in other disciplines.

Film

This is a quarterly published by The British Federation of Film Societies. The format consists of articles, interviews, and film/book reviews.

Film Comment

Film Comment is published bi-monthly by The Film Society of Lincoln Center and similar in format to Cineaste. Articles cover topics such as director and actor studies to film reviews.

Film Criticism

This refereed academic journal is published tri-quarterly by Allegheny College. Articles are academic type studies of cinema.

Film History

Each issue of this quarterly focuses on a specific topic, for example, amateur filmmaking. The journal does take an international view, so Latin American subject matter might be covered. The articles in this journal also cover the technical aspects of film and filmmaking.

Film Journal International ELECTRONIC ONLY

This is a trade publication covering the film industry. A possible source if you need information on the business side of cinema.
