castle Russian and East European Serials

Most Russian and East European journals and newspapers are not shelved in the Serials Department reading room. They are located in the main stacks of Davis Library (and occasionally in Wilson Annex or one of the other libraries on campus), or are accessible in electronic format (see below). Please use the University Libraries catalog to verify locations and holdings information.

To retrieve an alphabetical list of most serials in a particular language from the Catalog:

  • Click the Advanced Search link from the main catalog page
  • in the Optional Search Limits area on the right, choose your target language from the Language dropdown
  • In the same area, select Journals, Magazines, and Serials from the Format dropdown
  • Click the Search button at the bottom of the page
  • When the search results appear, select Title A-Z from the Sort by: dropdown on the right

NOTE: Because some journals contain articles in multiple languages, do not be surprised if your search brings up some titles in languages other than the one you selected.

Serials in Electronic Format

Searching the keyword phrase "electronic resource" (including it in quotation marks) will retrieve some titles (including books in NetLibrary), but many online journals and newspapers are not found in the Catalog but through the E-Research Tools. See the subject listing of electronic resources in Slavic and East European Studies for comprehensive information on relevant materials. The "[info]" links on that page provide general information on the coverage provided by each resource, with subsequent links that enumerate specifically which titles are in each database. The "live" links on the subject listing page take you directly to a search page, where you can select specific databases to search. The following databases (among others) can be accessed from that listing:

  • Universal Database of Central Russian Newspapers
  • Universal Database of Russian Regional Newspapers
  • Universal Database of CIS/Baltic Periodicals
  • Universal Database of Russian Social Sciences and Humanities Publications (includes an archive of Voprosy istorii going back to 1945; this archive will eventually go back to 1931)
  • Universal Database of Russian Military and Security Publications
  • Universal Database of Russian Parliamentary Publications (also called Governmental Publications)
  • Kodeks legislative database
  • Russian/CIS Statistical Publications
  • Russian National Bibliography
