castle Russian Literature Collection
A. S. Pushkin
The UNC-Chapel Hill library collects Russian and Soviet literary history and criticism comprehensively, with a special emphasis on 19th century Russian literature. Soviet belles-lettres, however, were acquired rather selectively. The library has notable holdings of materials related to Pushkin studies. One of these is A. S. Pushkin's Sochineniia, published posthumously in 1838. This edition was produced at public expense by imperial order of Nicholas I and the profits given to Pushkin's family. Russian symbolists are also well represented, including original works published by Skorpion, Skify, Alkonost, etc. The library regularly acquires publications of the first wave of Russian emigration issued in the twenties and thirties in the three Russian cultural centers of Berlin, Prague and Paris. The collection of Russian third wave emigre publications, including samizdat materials, is probably one of the best in the country. Acquisition of the André Savine Collection of materials on the post-1917 Russian emigration considerably enhanced the Library's holdings of Russian émigré literature. The Library also has a number of large Microform Collections.
