What If My Use Is Not Fair Use?
If you are concerned that your proposed use is not covered by one of the exemptions, you may:
- Consider using an authorized link. If you link to a website that hosts content, you give a user directions to find the work but you are not making a copy or displaying the work. When choosing whether to provide students with a copy or a link, the safer practice is to provide a link to an authorized version of the work.
- Use a service to get you the permission you need. Electronic Reserves staff at the University Libraries will help obtain permission for electronic reserves, and the UNC bookstore will seek permission for the use of copyrighted content in coursepacks.
- Seek permission from the copyright owner.
