Public Domain Works

The Project Gutenberg website (http://www.gutenberg.org/) offers a large collection of freely available electronic books in the public domain.

Some works, such as United States Government works, are not protected by copyright at all. For example, the following items are not protected by copyright and are freely available in the public domain:

If a press has republished a work in the public domain with commentary, introductions, or annotations, this added material is probably protected by copyright. Similarly, a translation of a copyrighted work may be protected by copyright.
