Primary Sources

The database offers rich English-language sources relating to China and the West for the period of 1793-1980 [more infor].

From the British National Archives, this digital collection consists of British Foreign Office (FO) fies covering the period 1949-1980. [info]

This five-volume set draws together British travel writings about China from a range of different sources. Although often marked by personal prejudice or ignorance, a large degree of thoughtful exchange with the land and people of Qing Dynasty China is evident. From the earliest official expeditions to China, until the Boxer Uprising, the writings here represent works of compelling scholarly interest, but which are not widely available.

This microfilm collection contains 733 monographs about China written in English, or translated into English. The materials selected include rare and renowned material from the holdings of the British Library, primarily the Oriental and India Office Collections.

Materials written by Western foreigners describing what they saw and encountered in China from the period from 16th century until 1911.
