Teaching at the Specific Locations

For all Locations
At the beginning of the workshop, please mention that the program is a collaboration between the library and the UNC-CH libraries. Introduce yourself and any colleagues who are assisting you and share what your affiliation is with the university or the library. At the close of the workshop, please have the participants fill out the brief evaluation form provided. The evaluation is voluntary and confidential, and it is extremely helpful to provide ongoing feedback about the program.

After the workshop, please fill out the brief report form . Please include a note about any difficulties, problems, successes or suggestions you had during the session whether it is about participants, library staff, equipment or the lesson plan or handout.

The Carrboro Branch Library
900 Old Fayetteville Rd. , ChapelHill , NC 27514 | Phone: 919-969-3006 Fax: 919-969-3008. All of the workshops at the Carrboro Branch Library are from 9:00 to 10:00 am on Saturday mornings before the library opens. A librarian will arrive to open the library and provide any assistance you might need. Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the class is scheduled to begin.

There are two banks of 8 computers: one with a mix of PC's and MAC's; one with 8 MAC's. There is currently no AV equipment available for teaching at this library so you will want to rely heavily on the floater or perhaps team teach to help participants keep up with instruction. Because these workshops are typically small, you might want to call the participants the night before to remind them of the workshop.

All of the Workshops at the Cybrary are on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 - 8:00 pm . There are 5 PCs, and a projector and screen we can use for the workshops. If you are able to take your laptop to connect to the projector, that would be helpful. If you don't and would like us to provide a laptop, please let the coordinator know so that arrangements can be made to have a laptop available. A Cybrary librarian will open the facility for you to begin the workshop and help you set up. Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before time for the workshop to begin.

The Cybrary staff calls participants to remind them of the workshop. If there are participants who are unable to attend, they then call a waiting list to try to have a full workshop for each session. On some occasions participants may bring personal laptops to work on. In order to keep statistics, please, check off the names of participants as they arrive.

Chapel Hill Public Library
100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill , NC 27514 | Tel. 919.968.2777
You should receive an e-mail a day or two before your session with a list of the participants and their contact information if it is available. Plan ahead to prepare any handouts you may want to provide. We can provide copies for the participants so contact the program coordinators to make arrangement for copies.

Instructors and floater should arrive at 8am or soon after at the staff/delivery door near the staff parking lot. Press the buzzer and a librarian will let you in. Instructors can check the computer set up and floater will let participants in the door (the librarian who lets you in can show you how to work the door). **Drop-ins: We've had no-shows for most workshops, so if folks drop by who aren't registered, it's probably okay to let them in, if the instructor approves.

After the workshop, it is important to escort folks out the door when the workshop is over. Even if the workshop runs a few minutes over, the participants must leave the library, which is not open until 10am . They cannot linger on their own in the stacks or in the computer lab.

Durham County Library
300 North Roxboro Street, Durham, NC 27701 | 919-560-0100

Instructors should go directly to the room. It's on the first floor in the Audio-Visual Department, and you should see the AV Department when you come in the doors out of the parking lot. Parking is free and there is plenty. Either (Durham Public Library staff,) Jennifer Lohmann or Janet Levy will be there each week. The room will be unlocked and the computers should be ready to go. The AV Department takes care of their computer lab and they know the classes are coming. Plan to arrive about 15 minutes ahead of time, just in case. There should be a teaching computer ready to go as well as a projector.

Either Janet or Jennifer will call registered students on Friday to remind them of the classes and move anyone up from the waiting list if need be. They will provide a list of the students the day of. If you would like to see the class roster on Friday, you can request it and be given a copy after everyone has been called so that the list is up to date.

When you arrive, Janet or Jennifer will be waiting in AV. There is a copy machine so you can make copies if needed. Be sure to check the students in. If there is space for folks who didn't sign up but want to participate, you can let them in at your discretion. You also have the power to kick out those who aren't actually there to learn but just goofing off. If you don't feel comfortable kicking folks out, Janet or Jennifer will do it.
