The Navigation Bar
Right below the menu bar is the Navigation Bar. The navigation bar can look different depending on the browser and version that you are using, but you will most likely see these five buttons:
- The Back button is usually an arrow pointing to the left. It takes you to the previous page you visited.
- The Forward button is usually an arrow pointing to the right. After you've clicked the Back button, it takes you to the page you were originally on before clicking the Back button.
- You can use the Stop button to stop a web page from loading. The Stop button looks like an X and is found to the left or right of the address bar. This can be handy if the web page is taking too long to load, or if you decide that you don't want to visit that page.
- The Refresh button reloads the web page you're viewing so that you can see if any information has changed (e.g., on a news site). The Refresh button is two arrows in the shape of a circle (it looks similar to the recycle symbol but with only two arrows), and is found to the left or right of the address bar. Also, if a page doesn't load properly the first time, you can click this button to reload the page.
- The Home button takes you to the page you see when you first open your browser (your home page). The Home button looks like a house and is found to the left or right of the address bar.
Try using some of these buttons. Click on the Back button to go back to the last page you visited. Once you are there, you can click on the Forward button to get back to this page. When you return to the tutorial, click the Refresh button to see if anything has changed.
The white box in the middle of the Navigation Bar has its own name (Address Bar) and will be covered in the next section.
Click the Next button to continue.
