ScienceDirect is the world's largest electronic collection of science, technology and medicine full text and bibliographic information. You will be able to access the tables of content and abstracts to articles over 1800 scientific, technical, and medical peer-reviewed journals, and search over 60 million abstracts from scientific articles. UNC faculty and students also can access and print the full-text of articles in those journals to which campus libraries subscribe. Science Direct also provides links out to articles from more than 170 other publishers.

Articles are available online here before they appear in print, and online access also features multimedia resources such as video and audio files, Excel spreadsheets and Word files. ScienceDirect also has an Articles in Press feature, which allows access to articles recently accepted for publication.

1. Access the main ScienceDirect homepage at www.sciencedirect.com
2. Click on the far right button labeled "Alerts" found at the top of the page.



3. You will need a login name and password. Register for free by clicking on "Register Now." Follow the instructions on the page to create your username, and enter in a password.
4. You will be asked which subject area(s) you are interested in. Choosing these will allow email alerts to be sent to your registered email address. You are also able to choose how you would like the alerts to be delivered.
5. Once you have completed the form, click "Done." Your username will be generated for you, and you will be given the option to Login. Please do so now.
6. Once you have logged in you may add Search Alerts, Volume/Issue Alerts, and Citation Alerts. (see image below)

When one of these alerts is triggered, you will be sent an email with the pertinent information. For example, if you want to be told when the new issue of Accident Analysis and Prevention is available, click on "Add/Remove Volume/Issue Alerts." By clicking on the icon next to each title, you may find out if the journal is available for UNC-CH users. Click on "Add" and the title will be added to your alerts. To add a search alert, click on "Add Search Alert" and complete the search criteria.
Citation alerts will alert you when a selected article is cited by new articles added to ScienceDirect
