How Do I Find Films?
To find films held in the Media Resources Center in the House Undergraduate Library, use the
MRC FilmFinder.
Note that this database indexes only films that are found in the MRC. If you are looking for a film that may be held
at another location, use the library catalog.
To search the Film Finder for DVDs, videos, laser discs, VCDs, screenplays...
1. On the UNC Libraries homepage select
"MRC FilmFinder " from the right side of the page. You will see this page:

3. Search by Title if you know the title of the film.
- Select "contains" if you know part of the title, "starts
with" if you know the beginning, and "is" if you know the
exact title.
- Omit initial articles such as "a", "an" and "the".
- Click "Search" to run your query.
4. To search for films from a specific time period
- Select the appropriate 10-year period from the drop down menu.
- Click "Search" to run your query.
5. To locate films created by a certain director
- Enter the director's name in the appropriate boxes. If you do
not know his or her entire name, enter either the first or last name.
- Click "Search" to run your query.
6. To find a film on a particular subject, use "Description Containing Text ". This is similar to a keyword search in the main catalog. However, the words are not searched in all parts of the record. They must appear in the
"description" section of the full record. The description often includes the names of the main actors, so
this is a good way to search for specific actors.
7. To locate a film in a specific format, use the dropdown menu at the bottom of the screen.
This option works well as a limiter when doing a search. For example, the MRC has the movie
The Matrix in both VHS and DVD. If you want the DVD version, you can type Matrix
into the title search box and select DVD from the dropdown menu. This option can be
used with any of the other features in the search form.
8. To search for films from a particular genre or country of origin, use the appropriate
dropdown menu to make your selection.
If you wish to browse the holdings by video title, country, genre,
or director, click on Filmography Indexes at the top of
the page and select the appropriate index.
