How Do I Switch the Keyboard to Another Language's Characters?

All of the computers in the Information Commons and Reference Area of the Undergraduate Library and Davis Library are set up to toggle between English, Russian, Chinese and Japanese keyboard characters.

The language currently being used is displayed through the icon in the bottom right toolbar.

It is a small blue square that will indicate:

  • 'EN' if English is selected
  • 'RU' if Russian is selected
  • 'MSPV' if Chinese is selected

To switch between languages:

  1. Click on the icon and all the language options will appear above it
  2. Click on the language you would like

To switch back to English, repeat steps 1 and 2 and choose English.

The keyboard shortcut to toggling between languages is holding down the 'ALT' key and then pressing the 'SHIFT' key. Repeatedly pressing the 'SHIFT' key, while 'ALT' is held down will toggle between available languages.

Davis Reference has keyboard covers for non-Roman languages available for checkout at their desk. These covers can be used on any keyboard in the Reference Computing Area.

Please see the staff at the Reference Desk if there is a keyboard language that you need to use which is currently unavailable.
