Free multimedia instruction for your class
The MRC Digital Media Lab offers multimedia instruction for your class. What we typically do is schedule 1 class period for the teacher and your students to come to the media lab for a lesson on the software and equipment we have available for your class. We can also reserve digital videocameras or digital still picture cameras for your students for up to 5 days. We will tailor the lesson to the assignment your students will be working on.

To schedule a lesson please email medialab@unc.edu with a date and time you would like and an alternate, and give us a sentence or two on the students' assignment (video, audio, image editing, etc). Please be aware that towards the end of a semester there will be other classes working on multimedia projects so the earlier you schedule your class with us the better the chances are that we can get you everything you need!

Booking Films for Your Class
Scheduling Materials
Faculty and teaching assistants may check out non-circulating materials for classroom use. A maximum of five (5) items can be checked to a single person at any given time. The Media Resources Center requires 24-hours notice to guarantee that materials, if available, will be ready for pick up at the scheduled time. Given availability, extensions on classroom use may be granted. To schedule a film you can email us with your name, PID, phone number, department, course title, class size (number of students), the title of the film and the show date.

Materials from Other Universities
To request a film from another university, your departmental secretary or business manager must complete a P-108 requisition form (available through your departmental office or at the MRC) and include your department's account number. Instructors may request films from Duke , NC State or NCCU free of charge. Duke, NC State, and NCCU require seven days for processing and shipping. Materials from other universities require three weeks to allow for processing and shipping and may also require a fee for which your department is responsible.

Screening Room

Screening Rooms
Rooms 006, 205 and 207 in the Undergraduate Library are available for class viewings through the MRC. Room 205 seats 52 students, room 207 seats 28 and room 006 seats 6. All rooms support VHS, DVD, VCD, 16mm, PAL, slides, CD and audiocassette formats with an overhead projection system and surround sound. In rooms 205 and 207 instructors can use voice amplification and control the rooms' technology at the podium with a touch screen interface. Reservations for the rooms can be made by course instructors in advance, in person, or via email. Please include your name, department, class, number of students, date and time. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours before the event. Please note, food and drinks are not permitted in the screening rooms. Also, the instructor or a TA is required to accompany the class for the entire screening. If no instructor is present, the room will not be opened.

Reserves
MRC Items
At the request of an instructor, the Media Resources Center can place any of its items on reserve for their class. These items will be available to students during the MRC hours of operation. The instructor for whom the item is on reserve may schedule it for class use for up to 3 days. Other instructors are allowed to schedule these items for class use, but the entire transaction (pick up, class use, and return) must take place on the same day.

Personal Copies
Instructors may also place their own materials on reserve at the Media Resources Center. Please be aware that the MRC is not responsible for the damage or loss of personal copies. Instructors may check out their personal copies at anytime during the MRC hours of operation without a time limit. We require that the item be checked out to the instructor, so we can keep track of its location. Please ask for a supervisor when you come by to check out a personal copy item.

Please note that materials from other libraries cannot be placed on reserve. This includes any items requested through Interlibrary loan and items directly checked out through other libraries. Videos and DVDs rented from stores like Blockbuster or Netflix cannot be placed on reserve.

Putting Items on Reserve
We require two business days for materials to be processed and placed in the reserves collection. There are two ways to place items on reserve at the MRC:

• Come by the MRC and fill out a yellow Media Resources Center Reserve Materials List and drop off any personal copies.

• Email us at mrc@unc.edu with a list of the MRC items that you would like to place on reserve.

If there are other people who will also need full access to these reserve items, you will need to either include their names on the List or in the email.

Taking Items off of Reserve
Near the end of each semester the MRC will send renewal letters out to all instructors with items on reserve. If we do not receive replies requesting renewals by the designated date, then all reserve items, MRC and personal copies, will be taken off of reserve. Professors will be e-mailed when their materials are available to be picked-up. Instructors may also request that their items be taken off of reserve at any point during the semester.

Copyright Considerations
• Our University’s committee on copyright offers a great resource page at:

• The Center for Social Media (at American University’s School of Communication) published a “Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education” last year, to help educators using media literacy concepts and techniques to interpret the copyright doctrine of fair use:

• Stanford University has a great page with information on fair use & copyright guidelines and policies:
