Which Scanner Should I Use?

Need to scan a book quick?

Use the KIC scanner for quick scans.

NOTE: Make sure you have a flash drive; you can borrow one at the Book Checkout desk at the Undergraduate Library and in the Science Library Annex.

In the Design Lab at the Undergraduate Library.
On the first floor of Davis Library.

Making PDFs?

Mac: Use the Epson Expression scanner for

  • Quick scans on the go
  • Scanning documents and creating PDFs

In the Design Lab at the Undergraduate Library.

  1. Open Image Capture by using Spotlight (magnifying glass in the upper right corner) to perform a search for 'Image Capture'
  2. Image Capture will automatically open and perform an 'Overview Scan'
  3. Place document or image on scanner bed face down.
  4. Press Overview to update the preview image. Repeat this process until satisfied with image.
  5. Using the dotted lines on the preview image, crop the document if necessary.
  6. The right hand pane presents you with several options:
    • Kind: Choose Black and White, Color, or Text
    • Resolution: Choose 75 dpi for the web and 300+ dpi for documents you wish to print
    • Detect Separate Items: Use if scanning multiple images at once
  7. The next section of the pane allows you to Name your file and select a final destination
  8. Select a file format:
    • PDF: For books, class notes, etc...
    • JPEG, GIF, TIFF for images
  9. When done making selections, press Scan

PC: Use the Fujitsu scanner for

  • Quick scans on the go
  • Scanning documents and creating PDFs
  • Scanning documents and converting them to Word files

In the Design Lab at the Undergraduate Library.

On the first floor of Davis Library.

In the circulation area of the Music Library.

  1. Place document(s) in document feeder (facedown & upside down) or facedown on flatbed.
  2. Open Adobe Acrobat
  3. Create > PDF from Scanner
  4. Select: Black & White, Grayscale, or Color Document for a simple scan.

or

  1. To customize specific scan settings, select 'Custom Scan'
  2. Click 'Scan'
  3. Under 'Scan type' select Flatbed or ADF (for Automatic Document Feeder)
  4. Select any desired configurations, then click 'Scan'
  5. Continue to click 'Scan' until the entire document has been scanned
  6. Once document is scanned, click 'Scanning complete'
  7. Name your document >> click 'Save'

Scanning Images?

  • High resolution images
  • Slides
  • Negative film

In the circulation area of the Music Library.fujitsu scanner

  1. Open Scanner lid. Place image face down on glass, oriented towards triangle
  2. Open Adobe Photoshop (icon on desktop)
  3. Select: File >> Import >> Fujitsu
  4. In pop-up window, select the Resolution (defaults to 300x300); Scan Type (Flatbed); and Image Mode (typically 'Black & White' or '24bit Color')
  5. Select Preview. Once previewed, select area to be scanned by drawing a box around it
  6. Select Scan. Once scanned, select Close
  7. View image in Photoshop and edit image if desired.
  8. Select: File >> Save As… (Use .jpg format for photos or .gif for other images)

Large items or images?

Use the Epson Expression 10000 XL for

  • High resolution images
  • Large items, such as maps

In the Design Lab at the Undergraduate Library.

On the first floor of Davis Library.

On the first floor of the Art Library.

Epson scanner

  1. File >> Import >> Epson Expression 10000XL
  2. Place photo face down on flatbed
  3. Professional Mode is selected
  4. Document Type: reflective
  5. Auto Exposure: photo
  6. Select desired image type and resolution
  7. Click preview
  8. Once image is previewed drag cursor (+) around the image to only scan that image
  9. Click Scan
  10. Once image has been scanned, close preview window and Epson scan window.

Use the large Fujitsu scanner for

  • Black and white scans
  • Large format flatbed scans

In the Design Lab at the Undergraduate Library.

  1. Place document(s) in document feeder (facedown & upside down) or facedown on flatbed.
  2. Open Adobe Acrobat
  3. Create > PDF from Scanner
  4. Select: Black & White, Grayscale, or Color Document for a simple scan.

Slides?

Use the Epson Expression 10000 XL for

  • Slides
  • Negative film

In the Design Lab at the Undergraduate Library.

On the first floor of Davis Library.

On the first floor of the Art Library.

Epson scanner

  1. Put slides or negatives in holder face down on scanner glass.
  2. File >> Import >> Epson Expression 10000XL
  3. Professional Mode is selected
  4. Document Type: 'film'
  5. Film Type: positive film (for slides) or negative (black & white or color)
  6. Select desired image type and resolution
  7. Click Preview
  8. Rotate or select images as desired
  9. Click Scan
  10. Once image has been scanned, close preview window and Epson scan window.
