university library instructional services

The goal of the Instructional Services department is to support the creation and delivery of user-centered and concept-based instruction that fosters critical thinking and furthers the development of lifelong learning skills. Instructional Services offer a wide range of programs, services, and resources to meet that goal. Librarians and subject specialists throughout UNC conduct library instruction and are available for consultation on classroom support.

We are happy to tailor our services to meet your individual teaching and research needs. For more information, please contact a member of the instruction staff or a subject librarian.


library tours

Students, faculty, instructors, and visitors can request a tour of any of the libraries or collections. Our tours highlight:

  • The organization of the library or the collection
  • Service points such as reference and circulation
  • General library or collection use policies
  • The library catalog or other appropriate finding aids
  • Other appropriate print or online resources

A library instructor will consult with you on the content and objectives for the tour. Please see our tour page for more information, or contact Instructional Services directly.

The libraries a wide range of web-based tutorials and research guides designed to help you navigate the libraries and identify information resources relevant to your research.


Technology Support
Instructional Services manages the Design Lab located in the Undergraduate Library. The lab offers several scanners as well as Web design, print design, and productivity software. To schedule a session or class, please contact Instructional Services.

Course-Integrated Instruction and Coursepages
A subject librarian can work with you to create an instruction sessions tailored to the information needs of a specific course or a particular research assignment. We can also create a coursepage that highlights the best resources and materials needed to help your students with their research assignments. Our subject librarians often create coursepages to complement their instruction sessions. It's you'd like to schedule an instruction session, please submit an instruction form. If you would prefer to just have a coursepage created for your class, please submit a coursepage request.


Individual Training and Research Assignment Consultation
Subject librarians can schedule an individual training session to assist you in the use of a new information resource or consult with you on the design of your library research assignments. To make an appointment please use our request form


Online Course Support
Faculty developing online courses can consult with a librarian to create a more information-rich course page. Whether you are using Sakai's course management software or an HTML editor, a librarian can assist you in identifying information resources and instructional modules appropriate for the content and level of the course. We can help you link items such as electronic reserve readings, e-books, e-journals, and full-text articles. See our Online Course Support page for more details.

We offer individual assistance by appointment and can create customized Web design, Adobe software and Powerpoint instruction sessions for your courses.
