Where Can I Find Information on an Artist?

One of the most important resources is the Grove Dictionary of Art Online, which you can find through the Library's E-Research Tools page. This major encyclopedia provides information and image links on art and architecture worldwide, in all time periods. The articles are written by major scholars, and the bibliographies are excellent. The Sloane Art Library also has the 36-volume print edition.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online is another starting point for background information for major artists; it also provides links to web sites and images.

Biographical dictionaries are a good source for basic information. You'll find these on the Art Library Reference Shelves. Make sure you know the correct spelling of an artist's name. You can check Artist Biographies Master Index on the 'Ready Reference' shelf, or ask the Art Librarian. Once you know the correct spelling of the artist's name, you can begin your research.
