When chemists talk about "searching the literature," they generally are referring to primary literature. Primary materials contain the original research results reported by scientists. Primary literature includes conference proceedings, dissertations, journal articles, and patents. For primary material to be published as a journal article, it must pass a rigorous review process called peer review.
