Tips for Searching for Cited References
Keep in mind that citations are entered into Web of Science just as authors cite them in their papers. Here are some tips
for searching for cited references:
- Author names can be truncated after the first initial with an asterisk (*).
- When you are searching, don't forget that an author may not be cited the same way in different publications
(e.g., Lippard S vs. Lippard SJ).
- Journal title abbreviations are not standard. If you search for
J Am Chem Soc, you might miss those citing JACS and
thus some useful references. It is probably better to leave out Cited Work altogether.
- Use one of the less common last names on a paper when searching to reduce the number of results.
