How do I know that I can trust the health information that I find? What is good health information? The number of Web sites offering health-related resources continues to grow every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading. Participants in this class will learn where to go to find credible sources of health information as well as how to evaluate health related Web sites. This class is taught by medical librarians from the Health Sciences Library at UNC Chapel Hill. Prerequisites: participants should have taken the Web Basics class or have good Internet skills. WWW, the Internet, browsing — What exactly are these things, and how do they work? If you are brand new to the Internet, this workshop is the perfect introduction. In this multi-session workshop, you will gain a basic understanding of what the Internet is and how it works. You will gain hands on experience "surfing the web" on the library's computers. You'll learn about search engines, how they work and and how to search more effectively. You will also learn about privacy and safety issues, such as viruses, worms, spyware and spam and how to recognize and avoid them. You will learn some of the basic tricks to surfing the Internet with more awareness of potential security concerns.
