What plants do best in this climate? Where can I find the kind of seeds I want? This workshop will explore information sources on the Web that provide helpful information for Chapel Hill area gardeners. Participants should have basic skills using computers and the Internet.

Want to explore your family history? This hands-on workshop will guide you in the basics of genealogical research and introduce you to some of the genealogical resources available through the Internet. Participants should have basic skills using computers and the Internet.

Computers are not just for work. You can do fun things with them as well. In this three day workshop, learn how to make greeting cards, party invitations, scrapbook pages and other crafty items with your computer and printer using more advanced formatting features, images and WordArt. Prerequisite: completion of Computer Basics and Internet Basics Workshops or have basic computer and internet skills.

Where can I find health and medical information, information about prescription and over the counter drugs, health insurance, clinical trials, or current health news online? How do I know that I can trust the health information that I find? What is good health information? The number of Web sites offering health-related resources continues to grow every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading. Participants in this class will learn where to go to find credible sources of health information as well as how to evaluate health related Web sites. This class is taught by medical librarians from the Health Sciences Library at UNC Chapel Hill. Prerequisites: participants should have taken the Web Basics class or have good Internet skills. Participants should have basic skills using computers and the Internet.

Description: Internet Resources for Caregivers: Do you care for a person with a chronic disease or someone who requires long-term care? Discover online resources, organizations and information available to you to assist you with the many aspects of care giving. Learn where to find coping resources, respite programs, community care options, law, policy and financial information and more. Participants in this class should have taken the Web basics class or have good Internet skills.


Health Information for Seniors
This class covers reliable, online health-related resources of particular interest to seniors or those who care for them. The number of health-related Web sites for seniors continues to grow every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading. Participants in this class will learn how to find credible sources of health information for seniors as well as how to evaluate health related Web sites. Additional topics include: disease, injury, wellness, drug and medical information local resources, low-vision resources, and other online resources specifically developed with the needs of older Internet users in mind.

Introduction to Email (Workshop Handout in PDF)
This multi-session (or two hour) workshop is an introduction to email. Participants will learn to send and receive email messages using the free Yahoo email service.

Introduction to Typing
This class is an introduction to the computer keyboard. Participants will learn how to type using the home row and all ten fingers. They will also learn how to type numbers, punctuation, and symbols in addition to letters.

Job Searching on the Internet
In today's day and age, employers expect you to be able to find job openings on the Internet. Many employers also require you to submit applications, resumes and cover letters through their web sites or email. They may also expect you to have learned about their company before your interview. This workshop will focus on how to find relevant job postings on the Internet. You will have time to spend searching for jobs and to have your questions answered about applying online and using the web to prepare for interviews. Participants should have basic skills using computers and a basic familiarity with the Internet and e-mail would be helpful.

This combined workshop will focus on how to find relevant job postings on the Internet and how to write an effective cover letter. You will have time to spend searching for jobs and to have your questions answered about applying online and using the web to prepare for interviews. Participants should have basic skills using computers and a basic familiarity with the Internet and e-mail would be helpful.

Need to find good book for the beach or see if UNC has the journal mentioned in that article you just read? Learn how to search the catalogs of the public library and the UNC libraries to find books and other materials on various topics. We'll uncover the mysteries of Dewey and LC and give you the skills you need to use the libraries with confidence. Participants should have basic skills using computers and the Internet.


Library Research @ UNC
The University Libraries on the UNC campus are open to all North Carolina residents. Learn how you can search the UNC catalog to find books, movies, and other materials you can check out or use on campus. We'll also go over some of the practical things you'll need to know to make your visit a pleasant and rewarding one, including bus schedules, parking lots, town borrower cards, and more. Participants should have basic skills using computers and the Internet.


Living Wills
This class provides an introduction to the basic concepts of advance health directives, specifically, living wills. It will explain what a living will is and provide sources of information on living wills. This workshop is intended for adults and participants should have basic skills using computers and the Internet.

The key advantage of a word processor is its ability to make changes easily, such as correcting spelling, adding, deleting, and relocating text. Once created, the document can be printed quickly and accurately and saved for later modifications. In this multi-session (or two hour) workshop, you will learn the basics of using Microsoft Word.

Employers expect attractive and easy to read resumes from applicants. If you have limited experience with computers, it can be hard to make your resume look good. This workshop will cover the basics of creating and formatting a resume using Microsoft Word. You will also be shown useful library books and websites on resume writing. Basic mouse skills required, and basic familiarity with Microsoft Word or another word processing program would be helpful. Bring along your current resume or its equivalent, so you can start creating a resume during the workshop. Safe Surfing: A Guide for Parents
The Internet contains a vast amount of resources for kids. However, there's a lot of inappropriate material on the web. The best way to keep children safe on the Internet is by educating parents and children to use the Internet wisely. In this workshop, we'll explain some of the issues and introduce you to some guidelines and resources you can use to keep your children safe. You'll learn about kid friendly search engines and databases, as well as fun and educational websites.

Web Basics (Multi-Session Workshop) (Workshop Handout in PDF)
WWW, the Internet, browsing — What exactly are these things, and how do they work? If you are brand new to the Internet, this workshop is the perfect introduction. In this multi-session workshop, you will gain a basic understanding of what the Internet is and how it works. You will gain hands on experience "surfing the web" on the library's computers. You'll learn about search engines, how they work and and how to search more effectively. You will also learn about privacy and safety issues, such as viruses, worms, spyware and spam and how to recognize and avoid them. You will learn some of the basic tricks to surfing the Internet with more awareness of potential security concerns.
