Community Workshops Series
For Instructors
Teaching at the Durham Public Library

Instructors should go directly to the room. It's on the first floor in the Audio-Visual Department, and you should see the AV Department when they come in the doors out of the parking lot. Parking is free and there is plenty. Either (Durham Public Library staff,) Jennifer Lohmann or Janet Levy will be there each week. The room will be unlocked and the computers should be ready to go. The AV Department takes care of their computer lab and they know the classes are coming. Plan to arrive about 15 minutes ahead of time, just in case. There should be a teaching computer ready to go as well as a projector.

Either Janet or Jennifer will call registered students on Friday to remind them of the classes and move anyone up from the waiting list if need be. They will provide a list of the students the day of. If you would like to see the class roster on Friday, you can request it and be given a copy after everyone has been called so that the list is up to date.

When you arrive, Janet or Jennifer will be waiting in AV. There is a copy machine so you can make copies if needed. Be sure to check the students in. If there is space for folks who didn't sign up but want to participate, you can let them in at your discretion. You also have the power to kick out those who aren't actually there to learn but just goofing off. If you don't feel comfortable kicking folks out, Janet or Jennifer will do it.

At the beginning of the workshop, please mention that the program is a collaboration between the library and the UNC-CH libraries. Introduce yourself and any colleagues who are assisting you and share what your affiliation is with the university or the library.

After the class, ask the students to fill out the review sheet. This is necessary for statistics. Janet or Jennifer will provide these review sheets. AV will take care of getting the computers public ready again. If anyone would like a tour of the library, either Janet or Jennifer will be happy to give them one.

After the workshop, please fill out the brief online report found at http://www.lib.unc.edu/instruct/community_workshops/instructors/report.html . Please include a note about any difficulties, problems, successes or suggestions you had during the session whether it is about participants, library staff, equipment or the lesson plan or handout.
