UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries Catalog beta

FAQs

+ - Why did the library change the catalog?

Our goal for the new catalog is to provide more intuitive searching and a better browsing experience. Many of the features are what you might find as common place on the Internet, such as tabbed navigation, sorting, built-in spell correction, and "Did You Mean..." Other features include:

  • A new document delivery service, Carolina Blu.
  • Enriched content including book covers, Tables of Contents, and summaries.
  • Integration with Search TRLN, which allows you to expand your search to include materials from other Triangle research libraries.
+ - How can I search for my course reserves?

Course reserves are not included in this version of the catalog. You can search our Classic catalog for course reserves.

+ - Can I still access the old library system?

Yes, you can still access the classic version of the catalog from the University Libraries home page.

+ - How do I search for titles, authors, etc?

The basic search auomatically searches for all the words that you enter across the most common fields, including author, title, and subject. If you need to specify that your search terms appear in a specific field such as author or title, use the Advanced Search tab.

+ - Why does the left side of the web page change with every search?

The new catalog offers what is called "Guided Navigation." Simply put, the left side offers options that help to narrow your search results more easily. The left side options are generated from the results that match your search. Any options you select are then listed at the top of your search results. You can remove any of your criteria at any time of your search by clicking on the small red box red box with white X next to the word or phrase.

+ - Do I need to use AND, OR, and NOT?

The system automatically searches for all the words that you enter. No need to use AND. If you need to do a Boolean search using AND, OR, and NOT, go to the Advanced Search tab, where you will find a Boolean search field at the bottom.

+ - Can I truncate my search terms or use wildcards?

The catalog automatically searches for the plural forms of nouns, but it is not currently possible to truncate your search terms or use wildcards. You can use the Boolean search field on the bottom of the Advanced Search page to look for variant forms of a word, such as color OR colour.

+ - How do I search for words that have diacritics such as accents?

For catalog searches that include diacritical marks in titles, keywords, or subject headings, we recommend that you choose the Classic Catalog from the new interface and perform your searches there, omitting diacritics. In the new catalog, searching without diacritics may cause you to miss items that are present in the system with diacritics.

+ - How do I search for a word that has an apostrophe?

Include the apostrophe in your search term. For example, to search for the book title Ain't my America, search the title as-is and do not drop the apostrophe.

+ - What happens when I sort by "Most Popular?"

Sorting by "Most Popular" returns your search results based on the number of times that items have been checked out from the UNC Libraries. Titles that have been checked out the most often will be listed first.

+ - Can I save/export citations?

Currently, you can export individual citations to RefWorks, and you can text call numbers to your cell phone. Other export features, including Endnote and Zotero compatibility, are slated for future development. A "shopping cart" feature, which will allow you to tag multiple records for saving/exporting in batches, is also in the works.

+ - How do I export citations to RefWorks?

There is a quick direct export option for single catalog records built into the catalog. You can find it on each individual record's screen; it is not on the list of results. However, if your records contains diacritical marks (such as accents), a separate procedure for importing MARC records from the catalog will result in cleaner RefWorks data. Please see our detailed guide to importing MARC records from the UNC-Chapel Hill Beta Catalog.

+ - How can I ask a question or get help with the new site?

Immediate help is available during most Davis Library Reference Department hours by clicking on the on the Have a Question? Chat Now button. You can also visit Davis Reference in person. If you prefer to call, the Davis Reference phone number is 919-962-1151. You can also click on the Feedback link at the top of the page to send an e-mail anytime.

About Document Delivery (Carolina BLU)

+ - Who can use the Carolina Blu Campus Delivery Service?

All UNC Chapel Hill faculty members, currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate students, and staff can use the campus delivery service, however service options may vary depending on your affiliation.

+ - What can I request?

Most circulating books held in the University Libraries can be requested through the Carolina BLU campus delivery service.

+ - What can't I request?

Generally, media (DVDs, CDs, VHS), materials held in Reference, Reserves, Rare Books, and Special Collections cannot be delivered. If the catalog indicates that an item is library use only, we probably can't deliver it. If you're not sure, please contact us before placing your request.

+ - Is there a limit to the number of books I can request?
  • Currently, there is no limit on the number of items you can request for delivery.
+ - What if the book I want is checked out?

If the book you want is checked out when we try to retrieve it, you have the following options to choose from when you are filling out the request form:

  • Recall and hold UNC copy: Items that are due within a month will be held for you when they are returned. Items that are checked out for longer than a month will be recalled. This means that we will contact the current borrower and ask him or her to return the book/item sooner. When the book/item is returned, you will be notified and the book/item will be held for 7 days.
  • Check for TRLN copy: We will look for a copy at Duke, North Carolina Central, or North Carolina State University. If a copy is available, we will request delivery through Interlibrary Loan on your behalf and hold the item for you. This usually takes two business days.
  • Cancel request: If your requested item is checked out, we will cancel this particular request.
+ - Where will the books be delivered?

For Academic Affairs faculty, students, and staff, requested books can be delivered and/or returned to any of the following library locations:

  • Art Library (Hanes Art Center)

Services vary for those affiliated with Health Affairs and Law. Please contact the Health Sciences Library or the Law Library for more information.

+ - Where do I return the books I've requested?

You can return the book to any of the libraries and locations listed above.

+ - How long does it take?

Our goal is to deliver the book to the nearest library or campus box within 2-3 business days (Monday-Friday). Delivery times may vary during holidays and academic breaks.

+ - How long will the library hold the book for me?

The book will be held for 7 days then returned to the owning library and/or re-shelved.

+ - How can I check the status of my request?

If you log in to your interlibrary loan/campus delivery account, you will see what requests you have and where they are in the process.

+ - Where can I renew my books?

You can renew UNC library books requested online though your "My Library" account or at any of the locations listed above. If you have a hold on your account for any reason, you'll need to return to the library where the hold was placed.

Please note: Books received through interlibrary loan or borrowed from a TRLN Library (boooks not owned by UNC) must be renewed through your Interlibrary Borrowing / Campus Delivery account.

+ - How do I request renewal of a book received through interlibrary loan?

If you need to renew an interlibrary loan item, log in to your interlibrary borrowing campus delivery account and click on the "Check out/Renew items" link on the left sidebar. Renewals must be made by the day before the due date. The lending library sets the loan period and some libraries do not allow renewals.

+ - What if I'm in a distance education program?

If you are enrolled in a Academic Affairs distance education program, you can use the interlibrary borrowing service. Be sure the status in your account profile indicates you are in a distance education program.

+ - Who can I contact if I have more questions?

You can contact us whenever you have a question and we'd be happy to help you.
